500 Point Salamanders List

I don't actually play 40k due to monetary and time restraints, but I've been interested for a while so I made a 500 point list for fun. Basically I'd like to know how good it is as a starting force, as if I did ever begin playing, this is probably what I'd start out with. My aim was a list that is functional, fluffy and fun. Also, can I use The Gate of Infinity and shoot/assault in the same turn?

Space Marine Librarian – 100 Points
The Avenger
The Gate of Infinity

Tactical Squad Alpha – 160 Points
Five Additional Marines
Flamer
Missile Launcher
Sergeant with Chainsword

Tactical Squad Beta – 90 Points
Sergeant with Chainsword

Dedicated Rhino Beta – 55 Points
Storm Bolter
Hunter-Killer Missile

Predator Alpha – 95 Points
Heavy Bolter Side Sponsons
Storm Bolter

Total: 500 Points

You need numbers in small games.
I'd start with two full tactical squads.
The Librarian is fine.
Adding a cheap Predator is fine, too.

Re:500 Point Salamanders List

Since those two pieces of advice are mutually exclusive, how about this list which segues much better into a larger force.

Space Marine Librarian – 150 Points
Epistolary
Might of the Ancients
The Gate of Infinity

Tactical Squad Alpha – 165 Points
Five Additional Marines
Flamer
Multi-Melta
Sergeant with Chainsword, Meltabombs

Scout Squad Alpha – 85 Points
Sniper Rifles
Heavy Bolter

Thunderfire Cannon – 100 Points

Total: 500 Points
