what should I purchase next

Im absolutely pants at prioritising, so Im going to hand this over to the angry mob. What should I buy next for my burgeouning ork army?

as it stands, my force consists of:

Boss

25 sluggas

25 shootas

5 lootas

Obviously I need to bolster the lootas before theyre up to gaming strength, but I plan to convert the rest from regular boyz to save money & improve my modelling skills. I also want to field some stormboyz, & I plan to have their unit as a mix of the new stormboy models & home converted boyz (I have visions of ridiculous heli-jump packs & orks with WWI style flying goggles )

I also want to include some Kanz, & I plan to scratchbuild a deffdread based on one of those APUs from the matrix 3. The reason Ive included a big mek in the list is because I want to play a few small games before going mad with the buying, & I figure the KFF is more valuable than a boss in such games.

so... whats the verdict?

what should I purchase next

Long term, you'll need more Boyz. For the short term though, I'd probably pick up more Lootas. Two reasons for that. First and foremost with a BS of 2, you need a fair few shots to hit things reliably. Second, Lootas are definitely a known stellar unit in the new Ork list. They draw fire like Dark Reapers. If you're fielding Lootas, it's good practice to either field multiple mobz or the Lootas with another priority target. Remember, Lootas' main purpose is to shoot stuff. They can't do that effectively if they can't put out enough shots to hit things or are dead.

You've definitely got some good choices up there though. Stormboyz are a great unit, basically Sluggas who don't need a transport, but you'll have more success with a larger mob than a small one. Your conversion ideas sound pretty fun though.

Kans are just fun little waddling dreads and they can shoot to boot. I like them and I've had more than a little fun building a couple of odd ball Kans.

Once you've got some vehicles, a Big Mek with a Kustom Force Field is well worth the cash and the points. If you can keep this guy in or around a clump of vehicles, he gets slowed fast. The amount of fire your vehicles will be able to soak up will go from descent up to ridiculous depending on how well you roll. While he does give a 5+ cover save to infantry, his best use is really to protect your vehicles, especially considering that working your units into a 4+ cover save is relatively easy these days.

That was the game logic. Now, for the painter/modeler logic. Pick up what you'll have the most fun with. If you're like me, you may game once or twice a month, but work on models more or less daily. The logic here is that I'll often pick up supplies before a unit I have to have in my army. You know where your preferences are in terms of parts of the hobby you like, so make your call from there.

what should I purchase next

Im liking the way you think Mr Giggles. Yeah, Im lucky if I get one game in a month to be honest, but I paint/model whenever I can.

My eventual plan was to have a couple of largish units of both lootas & stormboyz in the army. One reason for going with converting my own, aswell as to save money was that I dont want 4 of the same model in each squad.

what should I purchase next

I hear that. They're nice models and all, but variety is always nice too.

Pretty soon after I started 40K, I came to the realization that I liked painting and modeling. It was rather funny since I'd not done it since I was a kid, but hey, sometimes things find you later on I guess. I also came to the realization that I'd probably game once in a blue moon if it weren't for my buddy Sean. I'm fortunate to play with him when I do. He's one of those folks who's just a fantastic sportsman and has an infectious sense of fun and enthusiasm for the hobby. Definitely a pleasure to game with.

Now, gaming serves more of an ulterior motive anyway. It lets me showcase my paint jobs, which in turn, gets me more things to paint from my friends. Since I've friends who play Eldar, Demons, CSM, Smurfs, Orks and Bugs, I've a good deal of variety to paint rather than just my Orks and that's always a nice thing when I start getting a little sick of painting green.
