40k version of Deathstar?

In fantasy a Deathstar is a unit that eradicates everything that it comes in contact with - actually I'm not sure where the "little tiny weakness" comes in, a good deathstar has no real weakness, it just gets smashed to bits by something else equally nasty and applied the right way.

I would say Nobz are the best one. A unit of Nob bikers is pretty darn nasty - 2 wounds, FnP, T4(5), LETHAL combat ability, amazing shooting, speed, scoring unit [biggie, there], fearless.

I think the biggest problem with most 40k deathstars is that while they may be killy death, they tend to be weak. 10 Vanguard veterans with thunder hammers and stormshields is well and good but shoot them with something like lootas and they fall apart like basic marines, yet cost 5x as much. Nob bikers do well against pretty much anything from a tactical squad to full-on heavy weapon barrages to apocalyptic weapons. Watching them shrug off such things as Vulkan Mega Bolters without so much as a scratch is rather depressing.

40k version of Deathstar?

It is hard to compare as this is an apples to oranges comparison. It is two different game mechanics.

The deathstar build in fantasy works as it wins by being hitty, doesn't give up VP, doesn't have a unit size ceiling (or if it does it is quite large), and can win most missions (VP based) as it will remain ahead in the VP count even if all support is destroyed.

Nob Bikers and former craftworld-Eldar-Ulthwe-codex large seer councils come close but don't truely fit the deathstar context as they can't fulfil all the roles that a deathstar fantasy build could.

40k 5th ed doesn't reward VPs (see regular missions) as much as Fantasy does. Please note, this is not to say that 40K doesn't have rock hard combos that when used together the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts.

Re:40k version of Deathstar?

The deathwing if used properly has that effect. Perhaps different then what you were thinking but remember the scene where it is rounding the moon and almost ready to fire. That is pretty much how I fight with them. Find a piece of terrain and face off 2000pts of twin las and missile launcher fire against say 250 pts of your opponents army. It just dies leaving very little to shoot you back as you are all mobile firepower. As the deathwing has such small model count it is easier to hide than many others and just keep repeating the tactic till its over. It plays like that scene but probably not what you are looking for.

Re:40k version of Deathstar?

Well the point of the deathstar deathwing is it hide able. 3 land raiders and 3 venerable dreads with 2 las and missle launchers is hard to crack with shooting alone. Then the fire power is nice when you block LOS to most of your army with terrain and a land raider, like the movie scene I described. You will out shoot MOST armies, like the deathstar. They will come to you, like the movie. Then you assault them from land raiders. When they can't out shoot you they will attempt assault, they always do, like the movie. Then you hit them first. It works very well. I have never lost with it. I am of the opinion that the deathwing is a mobile shooty army that when it has to resort to HTH does very well. However numerous fresh units or lots of small units can start to whittle it down in HTH, hence its weakness, like the movie. Get close with lots of little stuff. I have always thought of it like the deathstar. However as I said before not what the OP was looking for but some similarities and worth a mention IMHO.
