Luna Wolves to Istavaan III survivors?

So I haven't posted in a very very long time because I was on Christmas break which means I didn't have hours of class time to troll dakka... but IM BACK!!

I have posted in the past concerning my creation of a SM army... more specifically making it a Post Heresy Luna Wolves. (Yes I know none left... fictional fluff creation)

After reading a lot more I was thinking, why not make a paint scheme based on the post heresy "survivors" or Istavaan III.

I figure since in the fluff they never actually say that the remaining World Eaters, Emperors Children, Death Guard and Luna Wolves (sons of horus) are actually killed... the book just ends.

Perfect opportunity to fluff up a SM army of super pissed off loyalist SM from Traitor legions.

So as for the painting/ modeling.

I was thinking of painting all of my SM in 4 different Legion colors. So for example I would have a drop pod painted purple and gold filled with Emperors Children. Assault troops painted in White/ Blue for world eaters, Land Raider filled with Luna Wolf Termies a tac squad and vindicator of Death Guard. ect.......

The only thing I am worried about is that one of the coolest things is a well painted matching army.. and in no way would this be matching.

What do you guys think? Would it look alright on a table, be at all interesting? Sound like fun? or Do you think its bleh?

C&C!!!

Thanks a lot guys!

I like the idea, but I dont think it would work for precisely the reasons you stated. I think maybe a small army of loyalist survivors from one legion would be better.

Another possibility is to make it a band of survivors, who have a uniform color scheme, but retain icons/colors of their original chapters e.g., the left shoulder pad and knee cap in the original colors.

Luna Wolves to Istavaan III survivors?

Consistent basing would help. Using as limited a palette as possible would as well. While that doesn't sound possible, use the DG grey for EC bolters and EC purple for WE plasma pistols, etc. I would also consider 'rebranding' their shoulder pads. Now, they might not 'paint over' their Legion markings, since they could well see themselves as the 'true' Legion. Especially since (at least from my perspective) a lot of the Istvaan III victims probably pre-dated the finding of the Primarchs. Capt Garro did, and my guess is that a lot of the men with questionable loyalty were the older vets who fought with the Emperor before their Primarch was found. But, I think they would all adopt some device or icon to show that they are unified, since they would likely unify under one commander. Maybe that's on the right shoulder, a greave, backpacks whatever. But, if they all have a badge that's the same, it'll help pull the army together.

Armies like this can look unified and not like an explosion at the paint factory. Also consider, since they are the survivors, they probably have limited supplies and restock, they may be re-using armor from fallen brethren (even from different legions), and they should have a weathered look. Wash with dark brown or black, which would mute some of the brighter colors, and make them blend together more.

You could also paint or invent (because afaik GW hasn't done them) them in the 'pre-primarch' legion names and colors (where appropriate). I know that in Flight of the Eisenstein, Garro remembers that they were the Dusk Raiders and had different colored armor. Again, the idea being that they're trying to restore the honor of the 'original' legion and wash away the stain of the traitor primarch by throwing off their colors. For example, Qurze (?) repaints his armor in Luna Wolves colors after Horus' betrayal.

Sounds cool.

Ironically, I was thinking the same thing today as I am up to that section in Galaxy in Flames - the loyalist purge.

I would imagine that they would not want to keep looking like the traitors after however (just from a fluff perspective) - perhaps a single colour with the original shoulderpads (ie. opposite of what you are looking at?)
