New to C:Daemons, need some input

Hello Dakkaites!

So I’ve been quite interested in building a Daemons army since the release of the codex. I am currently purchasing/building/converting one, but want some input as to what people would consider a mildly competitive (mostly Tzeentch) force, using the constraints I have set for myself. these are:

-again, mostly Tz. the first 1k pts I would like to make 'pure', but I may add some other units after that.
-quasi-zilla. I love MC. I have converted an awesome (imo of course) fateweaver, whom I would like to use. I also have 2 Tz DP's from my CSM army that I feel would help offset my weakness in CC. also... I'm not so big on SG's, I may consider adding them after the 1500 mark, and yes, I know they are awesome, i just don’t care to much for the model.

currently I own:

- Fateweaver/LoC (model could count as either)
- 10 horrors
- 3 flamers
- 2 Tz DP's (both are modeled in such a way that they can run with or w/o wings)

I am planning on buying at least 20 more horrors, and I am pretty sure that will give me a sufficient # of models for smaller games. I was wondering if anyone could offer me advice in turning this into an army. I am not very up to speed on good options for Tz units. I will of course take the changeling if the points are open.

some questions:
does Tz operate better using MSU, or large blocks of infantry?
should I sacrifice points from troops for some heralds?
what upgrades/powers are good to give the DP's?
should I max out on 3 units of 3 flamers?

what I usually fight:
Space marines
Space marines with DH allies
orks (all kinds, from horde to nob bikers, so far no multi-battlewagon armies)

thanks in advance, your feedback is most appreciated!

Pure tzeentch is a really tough list to play, because you're so HTH weak. 3 DPs are a must, because they're your only real HTH force, and they can benefit from fateweaver's re-roll.

If you're runnning pure tzeentch, I'd also say that 3x3 flamers is almost a necesitty. Flamers are simply that good.

If they can get six or seven under the template, on average, they'll wipe a squad of marines.

If you look under the battle reports section here on dakka. I've been running a tzeentch only list in a campaign for the last couple of months. That has the lists I've been using and how the games play out.

What point level are you initially shooting for? Is this a fluffy list or a maximum efficiency list, or someplace in between?

I don't think I would include fateweaver in a list until you get to the 1850-2000 pt. range.

My tzeentch lists usually don't use any grinders. I do that because it then makes it difficult for people to get effective use out of their anti-tank weapons when everything in the army has a 4+ invul.

I highly recommend looking at heralds on chariots. They really start to make marine armies cry.

One problem the tzeentch lists have is they end up a bit high on kp's. That's one reason I tend to stick with larger units of horrors. My typical 1750 list has 13 kp's. And that's with 4 9 man horror units. This can also be mitigated a bit by taking larger flamer units, something I keep wanting to try but I just have so much success with the smaller units.

thanks for the replies!

part of the reason I chose Tz is that I wanted a dificult army to play. Ive been playing 40k for about 11 years now, so have a decent grasp of advanced tactics, and tabletop skulldugery. that said, Bloodcrusers seem very tempting to feild with fateweaver. I plan to include some at the 1750 level.

initilly I will be playing a few games at 1000 pts, mainly just heralds, horrors, and maybe a DP (or 2), I know Caemons does poorly at that point level, but It will be good experiance win or loose. 1500 will probably see me useing Fateweaver/LoC.

im keen on the chariot heralds, how do you usualy run them?

Horde orks can be a bit of a problem, that's one thing that I keep thinking larger flamer squads might help with.

But for the chariot heralds i usually run the following build. They come with daemonic gaze, you then buy chariot, we are legion, master of sorcery, and bolt of tzeentch. This allows you to fire both weapons at different targets. You keep them in the 19-24" range band and sit back and shoot with them. On very rare occasions I'll take 3 of them and charge a small target. They are also good for last turn objective grabbing and getting around to side or rear armor with their turbo-boosting.

For a thousand point list I would probably recommend something like this:

HQ
1	Herald of Tzeentch w/ chariot, we are legion, master of sorcery, bolt of tzeentch, daemonic gaze
1	Herald of Tzeentch w/ chariot, we are legion, master of sorcery, bolt of tzeentch, daemonic gaze

Elites
3	Flamers
3	Flamers

Troops
8	Horrors
1	Changeling

9	Horrors

4	Horrors
1	Horror w/ bolt of change

Heavy Support
1	Daemon Prince w/ mark of tzeentch, daemonic gaze, bolt of tzeentch

If you wanted to experiment with screamers, then just drop the small horror unit (not that I would recommend it).
