If a mob of orks assaults a unit of marines and they tie combat in the following turn if say a second unit of marines joins in the fight to help out can the mob of orks direct its attacks into the newly joined unit of marines or can it only fight the unit it was previously engaged with.

this one has come up a few times now and no one seems to be able to answer, if you do answer can you quote me pages and whatnot so we can get a clear ruling on this.

The key here is the phrase "before any model attacks". Assault moves and reactions happen, THEN you check to see what models are engaged with what units, THEN you roll for attacks.

So yes any model that is engaged with the new unit after assault moves are made may attack that unit.
