Size of Heavy Cavalry Units, Bretonnian Knights in particular

As the subject states, I was wondering how many Knights (realm) I should take in a unit - 9, 12, 15? Does that number go up for Errants and down for questing and grail?

For other heavy cav, say Chaos knights or Empire Knights, what's the ideal size, on the GW site you see them in units of 5 usually, but is that optimal? Is it normal?

For Brets
2 main options.

Unit spam where you take a heap of units 6 strong. You can take 1 wound and still pack a punch... but its a lot of standards running around ready to be captured and if you lose a 2-3 models you will really start to struggle.

6 strong is where I usually see Errants.

Smaller number of 9 model units. can take the 2-3 hits and still pack a punch. Throw in a character and get off a combined charge with another unit and there will be little that can satnd in your way.

For other armies.
5-6 models (inc characters if needed) is most common. Allows one to die but will still have good punching power without going bananas on points cost.

My good friend plays Brets, and he often has 9-strong KOTR and Errant units. 12 knights can get quite expensive, especially KOTR, but I have seen numerous people play with 12-strong units. Having been at the recieving end of many charges, I can tell you that 9 KOTR with a Paladin puts even my best Dwarf unit to the test. Lance formation is darned impressive.

Hmm... since I'd be looking to break the enemy on a charge, I think I'll go with the 9 + pally idea. How about putting your general (pally or lord) and the BSB in the same unit? Good idea, overkill, or too many eggs in the basket?

What about grail and questing knights? is 9 overkill? do grail knights even need a paladin?

Most grail knights I see run in a regular formation (non lance), 5 strong or 4 strng + character, due to the smaller numbers of models.

Questing knights 9 strong. Not that anyone ever takes them anymore...

You could always try a mix of 9 and 6 'man' units, and combo charge the enemy with one of each as a tag team.

Questing knights are not nearly as good as the great weapon will only give you +1 str. Those that play brets around here run grails in a lance formation of I think 7, plus BSB, and general making it a very hard hitting unit of 9. but that is a lot of points in one basket. Try six, I think that should be enough.
