Will any varnish that I could buy from say, B&Q do, or does it need to be a specific kind?

This might be hard to believe, but I've found that good 'ol ladies hairspray works as a great substitute and as you can often pick up cans the size of a small car, they are cheap too. As my wife always has some around the house I dont even have to buy it! Score!

Get a test model and try some out, you'll be surprised!

Hi again

Not in my experience. Given enough time to dry and even coating, it is really resilient. But a plus in that vein, if in the future you want to remove the paintjob, warm soapy water and a good scrub does the trick

This is my chapter champion with a good coating...
