Modelling hair (magnus the red)

this weekend ill be starting a magnus the red conversion, basing it on a Warhammer Giant, and i have no idea how im going to do his hair. ive googled and searched dakka but the closest i can find is modelling very lank hair that clings to the hear (ala dark elves) or what looks like refined dreadlocks but never an article about making the huge mane of hair magnus has, its roughly half his size! for morks sake!

the two idea's i've considered were making a huge blob and cutting away until i had the details of the hair.
OR making hundreds of strands of GS slightly thicker than a paperclip and using them (as per the dreadlock style)

does anyone have a better solution?

Id go with a giant blob of greenstuff. Id probably make a smaller one first, for structure and to get the general shape, then when that was cured I would layer over top of it and sculpt in details, individual hairs up the front sides back and off the top. You could even use the thin strands idea once you had the blob down for a guide. That is quite a mane he has, I dont think there is any easy way to get the effect, but maybe someone else has an idea.

I think Elnicko5 is right. I just finished modifying a Reaper figure for an RPG this week that needed a ponytail look to look better... Basically just used a thin piece of greenstuff and used a wet edge of a knife to put thin lines in in it and it looks reasonably hair-like. Biggest problem with doing it like the source pics is that it might not look hair-like sine it's not a natural hairdo.

yea try the blob and then just refine it as you go. You might even want to try it first on something other GS so you can get the style down first.
Modelling hair (magnus the red)

Here are two ways to do hair that I have found workable...

1. Create the basic shape and volume with greenstuff, but add no detail. Let this set. Add another layer to that and sculpt in the hair detail (strands and whatnot). At the ends, pull the putty to create strands.

2. ...the basic shape part above, then roll out a dozen or so strands as thin as you can. Layer these on the basic form. This will give more of a dreadlock look, which may work out OK.

I may have to do this on my site as a tutorial... hmmm...

Feel free to post, or PM me any questions.
