Need Tips on painting Red Smoothly

Ok, so work has begun on my Armorcast reaver and the first thing I have noticed is my red is very streaky. I have used a rust coloured automotive primer as my base, and applied blood red over top in successive layers. Should I keep layering and see the red smooth out?

I have also considered to rebase with Mechrite Red and do blood red over that, but the rust primer is very similar in colour to the mechrite and am not sure if the end result will be worth starting over on the red armour sections.

Also, does anyone know if successive layers of blood red followed by Baal Red wash would work to get rid of the streakiness?

I may break down and *finally* break out my airbrush and some Tamiya red acrylics...but I am hoping I don't have to, but the option is there.

Any opinions from Dakka on this?? Looking for people who have solved the 'red' dilemma, lol

On a side note I have done a land raider in red, with mechrite>blood red and it turned out great, but did not have quite the same large surface area of the reaver.

I bought all the light color ones that GW's couldnt cover over.
And pretty much can do the job with half the amount of layers, Not to mention smooth every layer, no ( thin your paints! )
effect.

Re:Need Tips on painting Red Smoothly

From my past experiences Ive had to either spray paint or use an airbrush on large surfaces. Simply because GW paints just CANT cover large areas smoothly enough. It drove me crazy, I painted a few 3rd edition Rhinos awhile back and the first one looked layered and bad, the rest I sprayed and such and those turned out good.

I havn't tried large scale red but to smooth mine out I do thin coats of blood over black primer and GW's red wash.

I usually do 2-3 thin coats of red followed by a baal red wash and it seems to work for my needs.

Need Tips on painting Red Smoothly

Buy an airbrush.

Seriously. You're painting a reaver titan - you spent hundreds on it. Make the investment in an airbrush so that you can paint it to look good.

Here's my red gargant, in the dakka gallery. See how smooth the red is. It's trivial to get good reds with the right tools.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/8451-gargant.html
