Dealing with outflanking stuff

Ok since 5th edition started I have had issues dealing with outflanking units. Primarily 3 War Walkers with EML and Scatter Lasers I think (their different depending on the army i bring) and occasionally outflanking Scorpians in transport. So my question is how should somebody deal with outflankers? I know it depends on your army but what are some generic strategies that work best (doesn't just have to be against War Walkers, outflanking in general).

If you must know I play mostly Tau (empire not farseight or fish of fury), occasionally DA and am currently working on an Ork list.

Hand of Dume wrote:Stay away from the outer edges and castle up in the middle of the table if your opponent indicates he has outflankers.

And you could hold back some units for countering the outflankers.
Tacticals can deal with Warwalkers: 24 shots, 12 hits, 10 wounds, 3 dead Marines. They could strike back by assaulting them.

Scorpions are harder to stop by Tacticals. Better place your units 13'' away from the board edge.

It really depends what they have outflanking. Outflanking warwalkers are very different than outflanking genestealers, for example.

If they're running outflanking CC units, simply deploy centrally, to deny them the charge on the turn they show up, and buy yourself at least one turn of shooting, OR, leave a sacrificial bait unit on the flank that they'll destroy in one turn, thereby leaving themselves exposed to your shooting the following turn.

Outflanking shooty units aren't that much different than long-ranged shooty units, only that they're assured of getting a turn to fire at you before you get a turn to fire at them. What would you usually use to take out warwalkers? Can you protect it so that it's not destroyed on the turn that they show?

Dealing with outflanking stuff

Castling in the center tends to be a mixed bag of nuts. I play orks, and I find that I have so many guys that trying to clear out 12" to 18" off the sides of the board to prevent getting hid by the roving deathsquad that is a genestealer group just introduces a new issue. By saying no to Mr. Genestealer, I've said hello to Mr. Barbed Strangler and I start eating full hits from templates no matter where I they shoot (I play against tyranids far too often...).

I typically keep my expensive units that have no chance tight to the center, and put my boyz out on the sides. They are fairly resilient and capable of issuing out some punishment even when they get nailed by the charge. They typically lose the combat by an obscene amount, but will usually live out their short simple lives as the bullet catchers they were meant to be, and a quick retaliation strike from anything I have at hand nearby will remove the stealers from the board returning me to business as usual.

Given how random getting outflanking is turn-wise and how relatively few units they typically get to take out with their surprise hit, my boyz have usually already paid for themselves by the time the stealers go night night. Having never played against Eldar, or Shrike, or really anything else other than deep striking Tau and drop pods, that's really the only experience I have with it.

What causes the double posts on this forum? Am I the only person in the history of Dakka that has ever seen almost every post try to post more than once? I click submit once and receive an error stating that I have exceeded the number of posts allowed in a given timeframe, and find that I've posted twice... Is there a setting I need to adjust on my browser to fix that?

Outflanking is a total joke.

You know its coming since your opponent has to tell you he's doing it, and you can totally guard against it by "rearguarding" a side. If you have trouble with outflanking, the answer is really as simple as "powering one side" of the board, knowing the rules, and denying him entry.

Outflanking is a losing strategy.

Redbeard wrote:What would you usually use to take out warwalkers?

Broadsides and my 2 Hammerheads...so their armor doesn't scare me, its more the amout of shots they will get off. I ususally run Advanced Stabalization Systems on my bradsides because we seem to run DoW too often to my liking (we just roll it often). Was thinking of screening them with my 2 HH for a 4+ cover.

But lets say I have something more squishy like Lootas, or a gun battery. I would assume that leaving a grot screen back there that is large enough to provide a cover save from all sides perhaps? I do have a KFF mekk but he needs to be running up front.
