Are there limits to the distance an imperial guard regiment will travel?

So I've been following the exploits of the vostroyans. I found their home planet with the help of you guys here. So I know of at least two campaigns where they were taken very far from the eye of terror. Some vostroyans were stationed near the ghoul stars to fight off an insurrection and some orks too. Also the Vostroyan 9th was garrisoned on Nimbosa during the tau second sphere advance. Now the ghoul stars aren't that far from the eye. But nimbosa couldn't be farther from vostroya.

That got me thinking... Do guard regiments have any limitations on where they get shipped off to? Vostroyans are experts in cold weather operations. It was likely that because it was snowy on nimbosa (I think brightsword's cadre's white armor plus the existence of the vostroyans on nimbosa hints at that) And it was definitely cold and snowy on the planet featured in 'rebel winter' that the vostroyans were picked to be assigned there. So is it more likely that the departmento munitorum would assign regiments to warzones based on their availability coupled with their specialization and just completely ignore their home planets location? once a regiment is raised, it never returns home right? It just gets posted somewhere awaiting reassignment correct?

I suppose it is likely that their are regiments of vostroyans posted all over the galaxy, since they don't ever go back to their home planet to rest. Is that the same with catachans, cadians, or any other regiment?

About how many years would it take to go from terra to the eastern fringe in warp travel?

The longer a war goes on, the farther away regiments will be drawn from. You can say the war is probably older then most of the regiments veterans.

Their are some very militant worlds in the imperium, cadia, catachan, tallarn and most others Gw have made models for (that is, Gw makes models for the regiments who fluffwise will turn up at battlezones then others). regiments from these planets are very sought after, and are usually sent much longer distances then most not so renowed.

Then there are armies, put together for one campain. The imperial officer responsible will put together a number of regiments of his choosing depending on the situation.

Shep wrote:

That got me thinking... Do guard regiments have any limitations on where they get shipped off to?

No.
Except the range of the astronomican. The imperial navy may not transfer units too far from the "guidance".

Shep wrote:
So is it more likely that the departmento munitorum would assign regiments to warzones based on their availability coupled with their specialization and just completely ignore their home planets location?

Yes. There were some "charts" in the munitorum manual? about the way Guard regiments are deemed right for that
specific warzone and purpose in the conflict.

Shep wrote:
once a regiment is raised, it never returns home right?

Yes. IG tend to use regiments until they ran out of men. Maybe not be completly destroyed, but some BL books had "joined" regiments as new organisatory unit to keep the Guardsmen fighting.
So i doubt that Guardsmen return to their homeworld. But exceptions could be officers or veterans retiring, sent back to help
to train new recruts.

Shep wrote:
It just gets posted somewhere awaiting reassignment correct?

As long as the "high command" (sometimes of a crusade) deems the regiment able to fight on,
or believes the regiment is expendable but cheap.

Shep wrote:
I suppose it is likely that their are regiments of vostroyans posted all over the galaxy, since they don't ever go back to their home planet to rest. Is that the same with catachans, cadians, or any other regiment?

Its likely that any guard regiments get spread over the galaxy.

Shep wrote:
About how many years would it take to go from terra to the eastern fringe in warp travel?

Never went there, so i don't know.

I was just asking because i remember reading that it took pilgrims like 50 years to visit the first adepta sororitas shrineworld from the spiritual home of the imperium. It wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to recruit a bunch of 16 year olds and have them all be 66 years old by the time they arrived at the warzone.

Perhaps the pilgrims were not using warp travel. but if that were the case i would assume it would take a lot longer than 50 years to travel from one solar system to another, halfway across the galaxy.

A wizard did it... of that I'm sure.

Thanks again for the fluff clarity guys
