s1gns wrote:When you folks paint, do you assemble the model completely and then paint it? If I am painting something that will be mostly drybrushed and painted in mass. I will assemble then paint. If I'm painting an important HQ unit or something like that I'm pretty likely to paint it in partially assembled pieces then put it together. Like the legs and torso together the arms and shoulder pads together then the backpack then the head. 5 pieces is enough. I used to paint every single thing separately, but that got annoying fast as glue ruined paint jobs.

Yeah, it's frustrating painting models that are already assembled though. Especially SM's with their bolters in front of their chest. As for my boyz, i just got done dry brushing two of them, they're sloppy but it's my first attempt and it looks decent to say the least.

For my Chaos Marines, I've assembled their legs, torso and head, leaving their arms, shoulder pads and backpacks separate. This makes for easy assembly after I'm done, and I get all the little nooks and suchlike.

Depends on the model. For fairly standard characters, I'll assemble, then paint. If they are very complicated, or have pieces of equipment/limbs that cover up areas making them very hard to paint, they get assembled afterwords. If it's a large model, like Ghazghkull, then it gets painted piece by piece.

In any case, if it's assembled after painting, it gets highlighted/drybrushed/washed/etc. after its assembled.

When painting do you...

Depends on the model. Usually, I do at least partial assembly.

Space Marines and CSMs, for example, get assembled fully, with the exception of bolters and backpacks. Daemons I'll usually fully assemble.

When painting do you...

It depends, really. For my AoBR Marines, I assembled them first and played a few games before painting. Then, when I wanted to paint them, I'd just take the backpacks and Bolters off (Because there's no need to glue your AoBR Marines. They've got little peg things that you can stick them together with, saves glue.) and then paint them separately, whereas with my High Elf Archers, I assembled and then painted. Of course, you can't take High Elf Archers apart once they've been glued, but still...
