"Horde" Space Marines List - 1000 points

Hi folks,

I have this idea about my own chapter along with fluff. Basically, I want to field an army that consists of mostly tactical squads.
For higher points games (like 1500-2000), I plan to take a 400 points Terminator squad, a Master of the Forge plus several dreads (not venerable or anything, simple ones, but definitely with lascannon and rocket launcher and that cool multi-barelled cannon) more.

HQ: 100
Captain

Troops: around 700
10x SM w. flamer and rocket
10x SM w. flamer and rocket
10x SM w. heavybolter and plasma cannon
10x SM w. heavybolter and plasma cannon

Elite: about 200
2x Dreadnought with cc/heavybolter and Multimelter (Black Reach Dread)

I am an unexperienced SM player, maybe you can give me hints on whether this is a fun list to play or/and where the main weaknesses are. Main opponent will be orks.

Thanks!

You can't have both a Heavy Bolter and a Plasma Cannon in the same unit, unless theyre a Devastator squad.

That's a lot of SM for that points so really it wont do that bad at all... To me though, it's missing flavour (I like variety) but since youre going for mostly infantry, it works for you

Sorry if I quote this wrongly, but I think I read yesterday:

In a squad 10 marines strong you can have

1) One marine with special weapon of the following: Heavy bolter, flamer or melter at no additional cost
plus additionally
2) One marine with special weapon of the following: Lascannon, plasma cannon or multimelter at a cost, rocket launcher at no cost

You know it helps if you have the codex, then when you read it wrong you can look again.

What it actually says is:

C:SM wrote:
If the squad numbers 10 models, one Space Marine may replace his boltgun with one of the following:
Flamer - Free
Melta
Plasma Gun

If the squad numbers 10 models, one Space Marine may replace his boltgun with one of the following:
Heavy Bolter, Multi-melta or a Missile Launcher - Free
Plasma Cannon
Lascannon

So once you change your list so its legal it will be ok, just a little boring.

You also have the same kind of mistake on yoru listing for the dred. They have a bolter, not a heavy bolter.

This list also lacks mobility. An eldar list could stay away from you and blast with star cannons and bright lances, and the only damage you'd do is kill a few pointy ears with HB fire. The same applies to mech tau, and any other list built to stay mobile.

Close combat armies will eat you alive, and most can survive the limited heavy shooting you have, and wont be afraid of the smattering of bolter fire you put out.

If you are just starting the list is fine for your first few games as you prorobly won't be facing other optimized lists. Here are a few things you can do to help improve the force and its ability to adapt"
One thing I would suggest is to drop something for some multi melta attack bikes. A dred perhaps, or a tac squad. These let you reach out and touch an enemy tank you want dead. Like enemy land raiders, or eldar/tau tanks that are hurting you.

Another thing you can do is invest in a drop pod or three. These turn regular dreds into in-your-face-killing machines and lets tac squads adapt and deploy where needed to disrupt enemy lines before the enemy has a chance to do anythign about it.

Converting a dred to an ironclad would be good as well. About the same time you invest in a drop pod.

To help with close combat in bigger games you should consider terminators ... close combat terms with Lightnign claws and thunder hammers and storm shields are a way to get some punch in close combat.

Librarians also give you some versatility, letting you get more mobility by teleporting around, bringing an ap3 flamer, making invulnerable saves have to be re-rolled, etc.

Meph
