Non-spray undercoating

When I started wargaming I always used to use the canned spray primers. I stopped painting when I went to college, but now I'm starting again. The problem is that I'm still in a college dorm and don't have any place where I could use a spray. I've seen references to people brushing on a undercoat, but I haven't found anything detailed. Is there a specific type of paint I should use to undercoat? Sometimes I use acrylics, will that be a problem? Any help with painting in confined spaces is appreciated.

edit: basecoat != undercoat, give me a break, it's been a while...

I'm in the same situation, and I use either very watered down black paint (Chaos Black or something similar), or gesso.

Gesso is probably your best bet, and there's a nice Dakka article on it right here.

I assume by basecoat you mean primer.

Basecoat is usually your main colour of your figure's colour scheme, or else a relatively neutral coat that you are going to paint something different on top of.

Gesso as mentioned by Hordini is good for brush on priming.
