Rules on Transports and dealing with hord armies

What are the rules on Transports? With a Ork/nid Hord, I thought I should deploy in a fireing line(not using rhino), Turn 1 take the 24" shots, then turn 2 give them the rapid fire volley.
If I don't deploy in the Rhino, is the Rhino a seperate unit. Can I go into the hord attempting to do tank shock. When it is assaulted, is the unit is was listed for in combat also.
Basically, Can Transport vehicles start the game without passangers. Maybe used in reserve? Go off on it's own. When destroyed, what effect would it have on it's dedicated unit? With a hord army, they will be assault range in no time.

Rhinos (and all dedicated transports) are a seperate unit from the unit they were purchased for. You are basically mixing Force Organization choice with the definition of a unit.

If I don't deploy in the Rhino, is the Rhino a seperate unit.

The rhino is a seperate unit regardless of whether the unit is embarked or disembarked.

Can I go into the hord attempting to do tank shock.

Yes

When it is assaulted, is the unit is was listed for in combat also.

Nope. Only if both were assaulted at the same time.

Basically, Can Transport vehicles start the game without passangers.

Absolutely.

Maybe used in reserve?

Yes, although only the unit to which it is dedicated may be embarked in reserves or at the start of the game -- after that any unit may use it.

Go off on it's own.

Yes. No coherency. Can go off on its own, be in reserves on its own. etc.

When destroyed, what effect would it have on it's dedicated unit?

No affect other then they lose their ride, and any possible effect if they were close by from explosion, or from being pinned if embarked when it blew up, etc. Kill point is scored from this as well, seperate from whether the unit is destroyed or not.

HTH

That chance is *very* low druing a Tank Shock. An Ork boy is incapable of hurting a Rhino's front armor. Same with a Gaunt. Genestealer Rending means you would have to get very lucky. Even a powerfist has only a 28% chance of stopping a Rhino - otherwise the fist wielding model is utterly destroyed.

Feel free to Death or Glory that lowly Rhino. You feeling lucky, punk?

Yeah... but you listed the WORST cases. It's easy to paint it negatively with that approach.

What if you manage to TS the warboss? He might take the shot.

Also, keep in mind that, in these instances, TSing the units is (or SHOULD BE) more for bunching them up better for some blast, ordnance & template lovin'.

Eric

If you TS the warboss he has a 33% chance to stop the Rhino and a 66% chance of being destroyed outright. I'd love those odds!

I only Death or Glory if the model performing the attack is likely to die that turn anyways... so there are some situations where it's not entirely pointless, even if it is a long shot.

For example, I had an autarch with a fusion gun in HtH with my opponent's russ. He tank shocked the autarch in order to shoot at him with some plasma guns and autocannons, which were likely to spell death for the autarch, so I went ahead and DoG'd the tank, even though I had a fairly low chance of success.
