What is the Slayer Oath?

As I understand it Dwarfs who take up the Slayer Oath signify this by shaving the sides of their heads to form their infamous Mohawks, then they dye their hair orange (a colour of shame in Dwarf society?)

Then they are forced to wonder the lands in search of a foe that is capable of killing them, but because of the mental nature of a dwarf they cannot fight to lose and they cannot commit suicide, so they will always give every single fight their best effort

You could say that the most successful slayers are the biggest failures because they did not achieve their goal of being slain at the hands of the enemy in so many years.

Edit - Also dwarfs can force themselves to take up the slayer oath for a ton of different reasons, most commonly the death of a close family member or an overrun dwarf hold, but i think i read somewhere in the dwarf book that some slayers have forced the oath upon themselves because they were turned down by their love interest)

What is the Slayer Oath?

I was hoping that at some time in the past GW has a set written oath. Like below.

"I forswear all comforts save the embrace of the grave. I vow to think not on my safety, but on the safety of dwarfkind. I set aside clan, family, & hold - and take up axe in their defense. I fight until I pass away, yet I shall not pass from memory. I, Dargin Falrickson, take up the Slayer's Oath."

Something like that. I guess it does not exist.

(my verson is based on the 3 dwarf gods.)

What is the Slayer Oath?

It's nowhere actually spelled out, to my knowledge.

I do faintly recall and old WD (around 6th edition dwarf book release) having a battle report centered around the fall of K8P, where, at the end, a dwarf cannon crewmember takes the oath for having failed to defend the hold.

I think that, since for each Slayer the reasons for taking the Slayer oath are unique and personal, so is each Oath.
The end result, of course, is the same - he shaves his head, dyes what's left of his hair orange, picks up an axe and wanders off.

Re:What is the Slayer Oath?

In old Dwarf army book (one before current) they have the story of the first slayer, Gudrun.

He was a failed bodyguard to a Dwarf Prince named Furgil. When he (Furgil) was killed Gudrun dyed his hair as a token of respect for his Prince. (before going off to seek his own gruesome demise)

Guess what color Furgil's beard was

What is the Slayer Oath?

Yeah, that's one of the 6th edition stories I hated.

Originally, Slayers went off in search of their doom in keeping with Grimnir's quest for the Chaos Gate - he took off his armour, gave one of his axes to his son, and wandered off into the Chaos Wastes, never to be seen again.
Slayers since then have followed his example, given their worldly possessions away and wandered off, some seeking to go and help him close the Chaos Gate.

Emulating a random failed bodyguard that nobody really cares about - lame.

Following one of your ancestor gods in a hopeless mission - awesome.

What is the Slayer Oath?

it works with a dwarf suffering a huge bout of dishounor.
it is best if he can get to a shrine of grimnir, so he can cunduct the proper rituals associated with shaving his beard and taking up his ax.

though all he has to do really is shave his head, and swear an oath to die with honor agianst a worthy opponent

What is the Slayer Oath?

I think it goes like.......
Bones shining in the night
In blood laced misery
Campaign of elimination
Twisted psychology
When victory is to survive
And death is defeat
The sport is war, total war
When victory's a massacre
The final swing is not a drill
It's how many people I can kill

Maybe I'm wrong......
