Interesting Terradon idea

Ok, here's the unit:
4 Terradon Riders: 120 pts
Skink Chief BSB with spear (or blowpipe), light armor, shield and Sun Standard of Chotec riding a terradon: 158-162 pts
(Together, 278-282 pts)

Then deploy them in soft or hard cover on one flank. On the first turn attempt to move them up to another piece of terrain for cover bonuses. Second turn fly over a warmachine or missile unit and drop rocks+shoot. Third turn, if they haven't been shot into oblivion fly into a unit's flank and hope for the best.

Pros:
Massive number of shooting negs for incoming shots. (First turn: -1 long range, -1/2 soft/hard cover, -1 sun standard, -1 skirmishers= -4/5 to BS)
Drop rocks is more powerful than people realize. 5 d3 auto-hit strength 4 attacks that take place in the remaining moves phase while still allowing them shooting in the shooting phase.
5 two wound models makes it harder for opponent's to panic them.
Highly mobile

Cons:
Low combat resolution, makes them dependent on rear/flank charges and wounds as well as the BSB to stay in a fight
If it flees it loses much of it's protection vs. shooting. (fleeing units drop their banners)
Expensive and frail
Vulnerable to magic missiles and incapable of seriously threatening tougher units

What do people think?

I havnt played warhammer for awhile but if my memory is right ( lets hope it is lol ) You can always choose to
go completely to the other side of a terrain piece to make it 100% no LOS from enemy shooting or LOS based magic spells.

Most of the time enemy artillery are close to their other ranged units. After you destroy the enemy warmachines which you will , you can move on to the archers and stuff.

Im pretty sure you'll earn their points back easily.

I think it is a lousy use of your BSB. I generally go more bodies over characters for Lizards, although that was in the last book.

Cool and fun though.

I mean you could always lose the BSB and take two more Riders in the squad, with points to spare.

Interesting Terradon idea

Originally I had thought of adding TiqTaqTo to the unit, but he costs more than the unit costs in total.
It would be nice to bring them in from a flank, drop rocks on one unit as you fly on, shoot another and sit right there on the back side of your opponent's battle line, march blocking while he was -5 to hit you before you add anything like turning to face you or cover adding another 1-3 negs.. Then next turn you can charge with the BSB and tiqtaqto doing enough damage to ensure a win in combat resolution. I think the biggest reason I want to try the flying bsb in a unit of terradons is that it'd be horribly unexpected and against shooting armies without any major offensive magic, they'd be impossible to shoot off the table.

Is there a rule in the lizardmen book that lets a character other than tiqtaqto join the flying unit? In the main rules, you can't do it. Also since the terradons are US2 you don't get the -1 penalty for shooting at them like normal skirmishers.

Re:Interesting Terradon idea

frankly, most of the terradon's power lies in drop rocks. For this reason, I'd rather have more teradons than better terradons. For the price of that 4 riders+pimped chief, you could field 9 riders with points left over. Averaging 18 S4 hits on a unit they fly over is pretty rediculous, to the point where you can drop rocks on and/or shoot an actual unit (not just warmachines), and terradons are often more than a match for warmachine crews. I'm looking at you, repeater boltthrower crews....

Better yet, 2 groups of 4 would work well, not many people are willing to shoot at them with anything serious when they're only 120 point a pop.

Besides, the whole point of Terradons is utilizing feigned flight and their 3d6" flee. They work well as rock droppers/javelin chuckers who disappear at the first sign of resistance in the backfield.

That's not saying you can, just that I haven't found anything either way. You could deploy them both normally, although if I were going to pay 300+ for a sub par special character like tiqtaqto, I would attempt to maximize his usefulness in order to justify his costs..

Bleh, goes to show how often flying cavalry are used in my area.. We've been playing them as skirmishers, meaning US 1, -1 to hit and no armor save. US 2 and 6+ save I guess are a fair enough trade for -1 to hit.

Mainly I've just been trying to find a way to warrant a flying BSB as I find the concept intriguing, but I've yet to find a build that works.

I've gone up against a unit of terradons (4) with a skink chief on terradon added.

Thrashed the pants off it with 5 spider riders, it fled and then rallied and the surviving chief and terradon lasted another 3 turns until I finally shot them down with a hail of spear chukka bolts.

Interesting Terradon idea

I would only take the BSB if I was already taking a bunch of them, probably in two squads. And I would take it because I actually wanted the BSB itself in a certain position, or to have the mobility; not to take the magic power on the standard.

Even then I would probably take the BSB with the Hammer or Anvil (Saurus, TG or Cold Ones) and maybe take TiqTakTo. I do not have the new book yet though, I am assuming he is a fun/ optional Hero choice.
