Airbrush Recommendations.

Hey all,

As I'll be getting a Rhino, and Landraider soon I'm looking at getting an airbrush to paint them with. I know nothing about them so im looking for recommendations of what to buy. I am a total beginner so I don't need anything fantastic (and expensive) but at the same time I don't want to buy some cheap piece of that wouldn't give me a decent result even if I was an expert.
Not used the GW Airbrush, but I've won non-GW model competitions painted with my Testors A320 Airbrush. You can google an exact price, but it's one of the cheapest ones they do. Single-action with an adjustable spray size, it's great.

It's a bit finicky, and I'm not 100% sure if this is our inexperience with it or the tool itself, which has a lot of reviews all over. Many call this a beginner's brush, and it does seem the replaceable nozzles can get clogged.

One thing to focus on is air supply. The canned air seems like a good deal but you can get a cheap compressor for maybe 8-10 cans of air, so canned air isn't a great deal if you're looking for a long-term hobby. Less adapters and such on the air supply means less air loss as well, which can also be a plus.

It also might be a good idea to go buy an art/paper store and get either (or both) of airbrush 'practice paper' or even just cheap butcher paper... it'll give you something to test paint mixes on and to make sure the airbrush is running with the new color correctly.

canned air, IMHO, is not the way to go.

as the air begins to run out, your quality of work goes with it.

get yourself a good compressor, and you won't be disappointed.

I suffer from "Elite Starting Airbrush" syndrome, so I can't really point you far for a good starting airbrush, but I do have this little badger guy I picked up from Michaels (craft store) for about $25 for quick basecoats. It takes a lot of paint, and color change out requires a lot of time, or extra jars on hand with your paint of choice in them, but it serves its purpose well.

Happy painting!

Airbrush Recommendations.

When I started airbrushing, I bought a cheapo 100$ kit. I was instantly hooked and love it... so now I own a 600$ (Canadian, hehe) Airbrush/Compressor combo. Definitely worth it. For starting out, I would suggest doing something similar depending on your skill level and determination to learn to airbrush. Also, if you're only going to be using it for 2 tanks, then don't worry about getting something crazy.

Beamo is correct though, canned air is garbage.

Re:Airbrush Recommendations.

You might want to try your local hobby/model store. Some I've been to hold regular demos and such; using an airbrush is a very popular topic.

Also, if you're going to invest in a compressor (highly recommended), be sure to pop for a regulator and water trap to help ensure the consistency and quality of air.

AJC
