Post 2000: Deadshane goes to Adepticon

This will be an extremely long post consisting of little tidbits of my trip and 9 BatRep Summaries of my games during the weekend. A post of epic proportions as befits a post number 2000.

And so, my trip to Adepticon began on Thursday. After my plane landed at about 2pm I went to pick up our rental as I was driving for my group of guys that were going to be sharing a room. I was also to pick them up at the airport but their flights didnt land until about 8:30pm that evening so I had time to set up the room/food/beverages for the weekend.

After picking up the rental I headed straight out to the hotel. The car rental office gave me good directions to find the hotel and due to its height and a big "WESTIN" written on the building, I had no trouble at all finding it. I realised once at the desk that I didnt want to use my card to open up the room as between the rental and the hotel room a rather large "hold" would've been put onto my account. I decided to wait until the guys landed and let Marc get the room instead as it was in his name anyway. I had plenty of time to kill and decided to check out the main hall as it was currently "under construction" for the weekend. I met up with several personalities and a couple of friends that are common sights at these things, Luke Como, Greg Sparks, Jason Buyaki, and some other guys that I know. Smoozed a bit, checked out terrain, and generally made a nuisance of myself until I got bored. Not many people around really, and most of those that WERE around were working on setup and didnt have much time to gab, and I didnt want to get in the way. No worries...I had things to do!

I jumped in the car and burned up some gas to get the layout of the area, find out what restraunts might be availiable, but most importantly....FIND BOOZE! I found a little package store about 3-5 miles away from the hotel next to a 7-11. I dumped $105 bucks here on various imports and my ritualistic handle of Captain Morgan along with a bottle of Black Cherry Effen Vodka. These would make good mixers with a couple of 2-liters picked up at the target right next to the hotel. After picking up two large disposable icechests at the 7-11 next door along with two bags of ice, we were in business.

I'll take just a little time out to address the no food/drink policy of the hotel here. While this is a problem to some, it really is no problem if you think about it. I personally bought a couple of drinks from the cash bar over the weekend (another welcome addition to Adepticon!) but I held onto my glasses. Since there is no "leave your containers at the door" policy, I was never questioned when I would leave the hall with an empty glass, roll up to my room, fill up, then go back downstairs with a fresh rum and Coke and reenter the hall with a glass that looked as if it came from the bar. I suspect there were plenty of Beers being downed in the hall as well from people's personal stashes. Hopefully they were considerate enough to make sure that the bar itself sold those particular beers.

Anyway, back on track.

I still had plenty of time to waste before Marc (Stormboy97), Brian (WC_Brian), and Neil Cauley arrived, so I decided to check out the mall that is pretty much in walking distance from the hotel. I was pleased to find that the food court offered pretty much everything that a gamer could want food-wise. Often, meals are very expensive at these things and wind up being one of the main costs. The availiability of cheap options for lunch/dinner were immediatly apparent to me. However, over the course of the weekend I never made it back to the mall. This was pretty much due to a combination of not having enough time (adepticon leaves not much time for wandering about) and the hotel itself having competetive prices for food....and decent food at that.

About 7PM rolls around and I made another quick round at the tournement hall after swinging by target for my soda's to go with the rum/vodka that I picked up. I dropped by the 40kRadio station to thank Spencer and Scott for helping me get my painting done in time for Adepticon, (the radio show is great when you're focusing on your painting) looked around a bit more, then rolled out to the airport to pick up 1/2 of the Wrecking Crew's contingent at the airport.

The rest of the evening after the drive back and checking into the room was all the normal "great to see you guys again" stuff in between shots of booze and beers up in the room. We all made more rounds downstairs since they hadnt seen the hall yet. We talked about how great the terrain looked in comparison to last year and other things concerning the weekend and eventually made it back up to the room. Eventually that night, Green Blow Fly would show up along with Kenny Boucher (another WC founding member and creator of our websites/forums) and two other members/tentative members that I dont remember the names. (I'm generally really bad with names-to-faces, so no hard feelings)

Check in in the morning would be coming up quick and since it was going to be a long weekend...everyone pretty much passed out at about 12AM.

After waking up we all headed down more or less together with Brian hitting the gym before breakfast saying he would catch up with us in the restraunt. The line for registration was absolutely huge and we decided to get breakfast first. No buffet, I was a bit disappointed with this as I love breakfast buffets in these places. Instead I got the New Orleans Omlet which was pretty good. A 60 dollar bill before tip ensured the the 4 of us would be taking cheaper avenues for breakfast for the rest of the weekend.

After making it thru registration, I made my way back up to the room to check out my swag. Fifteen Hours? Neat, always wanted that book. Model Magnets? Sweet! Armourcast muzzle flashes? Interesting. GF9 deployment counters? Awesome. Swag Bag was pure win in my opinion. Especially since I was able to chomp up other people's muzzle flashes and magnets as they didnt want/need them.

I wasnt playing in the Gladiator so I didnt have the pressure on early in the morning. The others though had to get up and GO which was fine by me since I let them all have the bathroom early in the morning. Once the Gladiator was under way, I spent time up in the room lounging about and watching tv with some coffee. I made my way back down eventually and watched some Gladiator action, saw how my roomates were doing, and generally wasted time. I was nice and relaxed when 3pm came around and I finally had something important to draw my attention. Battlefleet Gothic.

BATTLE REPORT!

Battlefleet Gothic Tournement

My fleet: Waaagghh of Da Notoryus O.R.K.

Dethdeala BB-Warlord w/Extra Power Feilds
Kill Kroozer-Warlord w/Mega Armoured boarding parties
Kill Kroozer-Warlord w/Mega Armoured boarding Parties
Terror Ship-Trade Prow Heavy Gunz for Torpedo Launchaz
Terror Ship-Trade Prow Heavy Gunz for Torpedo Launchaz
Terror Ship-Trade Prow Heavy Gunz for Torpedo Launchaz
Terror Ship-Trade Prow Heavy Gunz for Torpedo Launchaz

3 fleet RR's

=1500pts

This disgusting combo of Gothic fury is about as nasty as the ork fleet can get. Contrary to popular beleif, Orks in Gothic can indeed play (and win) the ordinance fight. Those same people think that Orks have a hard time against Corsairs or Craftworld....which this fleet crushes given half a chance. Orks also have the seemingly strange ability to actually 'Piss off' chaos players. Since this is the second time I've basically crushed a chaos player in gothic and had him so obviously angry....but more on that later.

Bat Rep summary #1

Enemy Corsair eldar

Void Stalker
Eclipse
Rest of points in tons of escorts

Mission was "kill the enemy flagship" Double victory points for enemy flagship. Enemy Flagship may not disengage.

Secondary mission for both of us was "control the planet"

I saw that this mission would be difficult once the sun was on his deployment board edge...this means I would have a difficult time curtailing his movement. Instead I opted to wait for him to jump and hope he stuck his neck out...in the meantime I would make for the planet and ensure control of it throughout the game. I won the roll to go first and defered first turn to the eldar opponent.

Deployment and Turn 1

His deployment was a rather obvious ploy to seperate my fleet which I failed to fall for. I know how fast he could bring his fleet together which he almost did on the first turn of the game. His fleet consolidated almost completely to my right staying within his deployment zone with a single escort squadron making for the planet which was mid-board on the left side. No shots fired, 8 fighters launched. I made for the planet with my entire fleet moving AAF. My BB and one KK moved to fire at the advancing eldar escorts at long range. Taking out two with long range weapons batteries. One more to go to get rid of the squadron. My fleet launches 19 fighta-bommas which place themselves in between my fleet and the eldar fleet which is still at long range.

Turn 2

His fleet is within extreme striking range and moves to fire on the BB and the KK that fired at the escorts. His entire fleet opens fire and decimates my KK almost destroying it. After firing they move back out of range. His fighters move onto my ordinance, he loses something like only two out of the 8. My ordinance ignores his and moves toward target. The single escort that remains from the squadron gets hit by one fighta-bomma, making its holofeild save, but failing to move away from the blast marker...destroying itself.

My turn I successfully disengage the Crippled Kill Kroozer from the battle. It has a warlord on board and I dont need to give up that many points if my opponent remains careful. Right now victory points are 25% of that KK to him and the full points for the escort squadron to me. In order to win the battle you have to get more than 350 pts worth of your opponents fleet. My squadroned terror ships successfully reload as does the BB. I ignore the enemy fleet and make for the planet so that the gravity well can assist in my maneuverability along with the planet blocking line of sight to my fleet from the side that the eldar will advance along.

Turns 3-8

The rest of the battle was VERY uneventful, once my fleet reached planetside I used minimum move distances and gravity wells to keep close to the planet on the opposite side of the eldar. The eldar fleet never dared to stop within 30 cm of the planet as my fleet was always poised to jump out onto the other side and rip them apart with long range Weapons batteries. A couple of times some Fighta's broke thru but it was never telling. His Fighters kept rolling VERY well for resiliancy and remained a constant problem. Over the coarse of the battle another Terror ship was damaged and another eldar squadron was crippled. Once turn 8 came around it was a dead draw. I however satisfied the secondary mission wholly and received additional points for that. In retrospect this being a tournament, I should've probably refrained from reminding my opponent to reload ordinance 3 times during the battle. If I would'nt have done that my ordinance would've overwelmed him. He was a really nice guy however so I'm not too hard on myself for giveing him a break.

Bat Rep Summary #2

Ad-Mech Fleet.

BB w/Nova Cannon
3x various Cruiser w/Nova Cannon
3x escort squadron

-no ordinance

Mission was warp rift. We basically both ignored the possibilities of navigating the rift for victory points and instead concentrated on clobbering each other. The mission had a little 'tick' to it that required each player to choose a single unit from his fleet, roll a dice and on a 5+ that unit would move d6cm in a random direction into the facing of your choosing. My secondary objective was to stop all enemy escorts, his was to break thru my lines and make it to my board edge/deployment zone, not sure which...he never made it!

Turn 1

I go first. My Terror Ship squadron 'rifts all the way back to my table edge. My entire fleet moves AAF to engage the enemy. Launch assault boats for escort destruction and torpedoes. My shooting is inneffectual.

His turn, a cruiser 'rifts right in front of one of my Kill Kroozers. Opens fire with weapons batteries doing nothing to my armoured prow. Two Nova Cannons hit my BB damaging it significantly but not crippling it. During the ordinance phase Three of my waves of two AB's take out a squadron of Escorts. Torpedoes hit here and there doing ticks of damage...nothing severe.

Turn 2

I reload ordinance across my fleet. None of my fleet 'rifts. Kill Kroozer moves into base to base with his 'rifted cruiser. Terror Squadron Advances, BB takes on his bb and another Cruiser at Knife fighting range doing decent damage. After softening up his cruiser with fire, my healthy KK destroys it with the boarding action. More escorts eaten by Assault boats

His turn two movement sees his remaining escorts trying to "Break Thru" after a 'rift towards my table edge. Nova cannons are now too close to fire and he instead uses pt/stbd weapons/lances to fire at me. doing damage here and there. BB now crippled and braced. During his ordinance, more fighta-bomma's make runs against his ships. d3+3 seems made for runs against admech cruisers as they have 3 turrets. Decent damage inflicted. After his movement...the combat is about to get REALLY dirty.

Turn 3/4

I again successfully reload the terror squadron. They move and fire at the escorts trying to escape...destroying them. BB 'rifts behind his BB and shoots into the rear...more ticks of damage. KK that just finished boarding the Cruiser boards another....destroying it.

His turn has his remaining cruiser and BB firing at his own hulks in an attempt to destroy them and hit me with lance hits. One explodes...the other continues drifting...minimal damage to my fleet.

Turn 5 and on...

Terrors again reload and my fleet destroys his remaining cruiser with firepower and bomber runs.....drifts.

The rest of the game goes until he finally concedes defeat after a Rift movement keeps his BB from getting off of the board.

Bat Rep Summary #3

Chaos Fleet

Tzeench Devestation
Squadron of 4 cruisers consisting of slaughters and murders
Squadron of 3 cruisers consisting of Slaughters and murders

Mission, I cannot remember what the mission was since my only concern is that one of my two KK's had to contribute to a kill.(a secondary objective) Otherwise the mission was rather unimportant to me as I had deemed it easier to simply kill the enemy fleet.

Deployment and turn 1

Deployment was 30cm in and my opponent decided to go first. His two squadrons fearlessly charged the middle of the board in an attempt to get to me quick. I was fired on with minimal weaponry that barely managed to penetrate sheilds here and there.

My fleet steams AAF and reaches Knife fighting range early. I consolidate fire on both squadrons and after the carnage and ordinance attacks...both squadrons are braced and a couple of cruisers are near death. My opponent didnt know about shooting at one or the other type of ordinance concerning torpedoes/bombers...he was visibly upset about this.

Turn 2

Devestation reloads its impotent ordinance compliment. Braced squadrons fire on my Terror squadron. My opponent makes sure I dont forget to brace...which I decline to do....Orks have more Hit points than sense after all....he cripples a terror ship, but is about to take it on the chin.

My turn....I reload. My fleet is now in his midst shooting out of one side to one squadron, the front to another. Ordinance to stragglers....I decimate his fleet. One cruiser is also boarded by a KK....destroyed. He is again visably upset with the ordinance rules, but I think he was also upset with an opponent that is unwilling to go with his plans and brace for impact halving my firepower and stopping my ability to launch another wave of ordinance. Be basically gives up at this point allowing me to pummel his fleet to death until all 6 cruisers are either exploded or hulked with his devestation running away with his tail in between his legs.

What is it with some players? This last one was a very gratifying victory. Some players can simply not handle getting soundly thrashed. It happened to me last year at adepticon going up against the overall winner. (who managed to avoid our rematch this year and won overall again, thanx to the eldar player from first round....I'll be looking for him again next year) I dont remember getting visably PISSED that I lost...from what I could tell...he deserved it. The guy simply couldnt beleive that an ork fleet could school him like that...he underestimated both the fleet, AND his opponent (by not Bracing for impact and allowing him to damage many ships with lots of points). Yes, a very satisfying victory indeed.

All in all, in my opinion, this tournament proved beyond a shadow of a doubt how effective ork ordinance is. By squadroning my 4 terror ships, I could ensure leadership 8 reloads. Tie this in with enemy special orders and 3 fleet RR's and I only had a single game turn out of the entire tournement where my Terror's failed to load ordinance. My ships were able to keep fighters and torpedo's in the air.

That makes out of 3 years running orks at adepticon, one overall, and one Naval Tactician. Next year I'm looking for the Tau player. We still need our rematch.

SATURDAY TEAM TOURNEMENT DAY

Teams list

Warboss on Bike with PK and all the trimmings

7xNob Bikers w/5xPower Klaw, and assorted wargear
Painboy on bike

20x Shoota Boyz, Nob w/PK

10x Gretchin w/ slaver

1x Grot Bomb

All players have Identical lists.

BATTLE REPORT SUMMARY -This will be rather short since I hate Nob Bikers anyway and we got schooled. I'm just going to post the enemy list and aftermath. Everyone knows how Nob Bikers run anyway, what I'll do is point out what I personally experienced so far as our defeats.

Marc Parker and I team up against the first group. Which consists of....

Necron Lord
2x10 Necron warriors
7xImmortal
Monolith

Khorne Daemon Prince
2x 6xPlaguebearers
8x Bloodcrushers
SoulGrinder

Marc and I fairly crushed our opponents while our teammates on the other table had a bit of trouble.
We massacred, our teammates got a minor defeat.

Game 2

Brian Poole and I team up. We're apparently fighting another group that we fought a year or so ago and stomped...they're about to get their revenge.

They're running an eldar/Dark eldar Mech coalition with a grand total of 11 Dark/Bright lances mostly vehicular based for fast movement and firing.

Brian and I lose the roll to go second...we're instantly in trouble with the smallish squadrons we're running. I lean over to Marc and Neil and verify that we should start in reserves and turbo onto the board, they agree. Brian disagrees thinking we should try to steal and weather the storm of fire. We opt to go with last years champions' opinions on what we should do and start in reserves robbing the eldar coalition of two rounds of fire.

Brian on round two brings on his bikers, and a unit of boyz....I wind up getting my grot bomb.
Brian turbos up and winds up taking heinous damage after some bad dice and a firedragon Alpha Strike. He counterattacks some in later turns but his bikers wind up eating it in rounds 2-3.

Our grot bombs are basically ineffective.

My Nob bikers dont arrive until turn 4...I avoid a firestorm of shooting thru range and intervening terrain. I'm almost able to force a tie thanx to careful maneuvering of my own late arriving forces but it isnt enough. Brian is wiped out after weathering a full 7 turns of mobile eldar firepower.

Minor loss for our side, Major win for the 'Champions' (however, I'll note here that they actually got to go first against their opponents. They ask us WTF? We tell them...you're army dudes, we followed your instructions.

Game 3

Neil and I are teamed up this round

'Lash List ..........

Neil and I go first, pressing hard, boosting right up in front of the enemy army. They lash my nob bikers twice so that after the charge by a chaos Dread is received, NO pk's will be within 2". They DO NOT shoot my nobs as they dont want any straggling wounds to minimise the combat res during the HtH...instead they fire everything at Neils nobs softening them up a bit. Dread charges my Bikers...kills 3, I need a 3 to stay...I fail...Dreadnought catches my bikers. 100's of points go swirling down the toilet. Marc looks over from the other table in disbeleif like its somebody's fault. I'm laughing!

Basically that exchange sets the tone for the game. After Neils Bikers are handled we agree to concede the Massacre...this is after about 20-30 min of play. Our opponents are gratious winners and with my laughing about the stupidity of Nob Bikers and telling them "Masterfully Done...good game guys!" they seem genuinly sorry for the ass-whoopin', Neil and I both snub off their guilt and instead wind up shooting the breeze with one of them for the next 45 min or so. Cool guys.

We get Massacred, Marc and Brian take a minor defeat.

Game 4

Brian and I decide to play together since we both enjoy teaming up cause we get stupid and crack each other up all the time!

Against chaos marine horde featuring Fabius Bile and Huron Blackheart.

Our opponents honestly had no idea what Nob bikers were all about...and their army was ill-equipped to handle them anyway. They just came at us after we turboed into their face. Minimal usesless shooting doing nothing to my squadron of bikers. My bikers get charged by 3 squads of marines, Fabius Bile, Huron, and 3 oblits. I lose a couple of bikers (applying instant death wounds to bikers already wounded by bolter/plasma fire) and in return I kill off the oblits, Huron, Fabious AND a couple of marines. They run.

Brian cleans up with his bikers for a total massacre. I felt bad for the kids we were playing, one of them seemed a little upset, but "oh well" thats the effect that "nob bikers" and/or "getting massacred" has on some people.

Marc and Neil have similar results on the other board, but instead of Fabius and Huron, they dealt with Abby and Kharn

Massacre for both our Teams...shooting us up the board a bit so as not to be completely humiliated when the overall results are tallied.

WC Morks Angels.... http://www.adepticon.org/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=200

Final Batreps for championships coming today/tomorrow....

Thats because there are so many better options than the unreliable dread in the codex.

And because Nob Bikers are one of the best units in fifth.

Brightlances on Nob Bikers are futile. Yeah you might kill one before they get there (you have one turn to fire) but they are still gonna get ya. Also turboboosting nobs arent killing anything? Do you not see the irony that its because they are spending one turn crossing the table into your DP?

Ok... your opponent has 11 instant-death-to-nob weapons on BS 4 platforms that can move 12 and fire, or more 24 to redeploy, and shoot 36. Granted, you run out of room on the table eventually, but coming in piecemeal against an army that can out-range you and effectively kill your nob bikers... anyways, it's the movement capabilities that keep the bikers turboboosting in order to have the best chance against the lances, and to also try to keep up.

Did you read the original post?

Who says I am reserving?

Also 11 weapons like that are only going to kill maybe 1-2 per turn. You have 15-20 plus two 3 wound warbosses you have to deal with.

Also that is a ridiculous amount of points. 11 missles or bright lances is about 3-400 points just for the guns, not for the tank it is on and that is if they are BS4. If you are putting bright lanes on guardian platforms then forget it the game is already over.

Yea, really dug the BFG report Shane, thanks for that. Lets me know how out of it I am on the competitive BFG front (even if part of me doesn't want to get stuck into that metagame too) ...

Maybe a dumb question, but how did you do this year?
