Any good ideas?

I think I want the bottom to be almost black and then have brown and black streaks up the side until the model starts to taper. Do you think that will look good?

Vallejo sells Smoky Ink from their game color line that may help. Also some (fewer than the others) ash-ey grey/white streaks painted first. Kind of like the Tycho crater on the moon. Just some thoughts.

No. No. No. I do not think it is possible to hold the match at such a short distance without melting and damaging the hull. In the worst case, It will end up looking so bad you might just ´have made the mini in hardened clay instead of shelling out the money for the pod.

yeah, should look great. apart from vallejo's smoky ink, there's a great smoke paint from tamiya too (i prefer it, it's transparent). just put in on in thin layers, or airbrush it, if you can.

Tamiya Smoke is cool as mentioned above ^^^ It dries glossy and it has hazardous fumes. I didn't know this when I heard a bunch of people talking about it.

Burns. If you don't wanna shell out the $$ for MIG Pigments. Buy some pastel sticks. I used it on my Dread and turned out great. Just shave on it with your hobby knife or use sand paper to make the powder. Apply a clear varnish or medium where you want it and apply the pastel dust with a brush.

A pic of my WIP on the Dread so you can see the results.

I like the look of the pastels, how do you think clear matte sealer will keep it from rubbing off?

Well when you seal over it, it binds the powder together. Unless you make a huge mound of powder I don't see any way it would come off during game play. But if you go this route, save the pastel work for last or you might risk losing some of it while painting the rest.

Well, I only worked on the burns from a jump pack but here is what I did:
1 - After I finished painting the figure, I dry brushed silver in the area where the burns will be located. Kind of exposed metal effect.
2 - Next, I dry brushed a brown. For the effect of rust build up at the exposed metal.
3 - Last, dry brush black for the burns. With a light brush of sliver again for a hint of exposed metal.
End product:

I know, it's not very clear. Here's another pic for reference.
