Hello Oggers,

I say the Imperium is the most evil of all the races. We have the light of the Emperor. Through His suffering we are cleansed. Through His power we are defended. Through His sacrifice we live.

Yet, daily countless citizens of the Imperium turn their backs on our Holy Emperor! Oh, the horror and shame of it! Little more than beasts they prize their comfort and the brief length of their days more than our God Emperor.

No matter how many we burn, we judge, we persecute, our race is never clean. Every new generation a new brood of vipers and traitors is spawned. Oh Emperor...forgive us!

The Xenos do not know you.

Chaos betrayed you. Once.

The only people who are not evil are the Necrons and Nids, simply because they dont have feelings at all. Orks Might be malicious, which could be construed as evil i guess.

How can Chaos be winning for most evil?!?

Chaos represents wild abandon of the individual (albeit in perverted and oppressive ways) and each Chaos god actually represents functions of the natural world (again perverted to the extreme).

The Empire represents ignorance, repression and racism (true racism not our earthbound ethnocentrism). There is no identity. You are born to die for a catatonic zombie on a toilet and taught to fear anything and everything which you don't understand.

Better free in hell than a slave in heaven. I can understand why so many go to Chaos. Of course, maybe it is just two different sides of the same coin, two extreme swings of the pendulum, two.... Okay, enough cliches'. Just some thoughts, I don't really know if I had a point to make.

This is how I view it all:
Tyranids: Animalistic instincts following a hive mind. Nothing terrible.
Necrons: Kind of Borg-esque from what I understand.
Orks: Give in to their desires, which happens to be killing.
Chaos: Desire and instinct embodied, though the Chaos Marines are evil, considering they are traitors.
Eldar: A dying race trying to cling to survival.
Imperium: An empire run off of ignorance, which while bad, unifies them in a certain way.
Tau: Evil, as Gwar said.

Most of them are evil but the most evil are Dark Eldar, and here is why:

Firstly ill start with Chaos, THEY ARE NOT THE MOST EVIL! they are beyond evil hence the name Chaos! for good and/or evil to exist there needs to be some sort of order in order to carry out the good or evil. Chaos is just random madness influenced by either the Chaos gods or impulse of the individuals themselves. But yes there are ordered attacks directed by the Chaos Lords and/or Gods but not enough to be actually evil.

Tyranids, well they are mindless really. They do things that are considered evil but they dont have a consious mind or an intention of doing evil so therefore are not 'evil'.

Tau, hehehe well there is a thought. Now I have collected Tau on the side and have the latest codex so here is my statement about them: FOR THE GREATER GOOD!! [sarcastic cough], if by greater good they mean from the day you are born you are put into a 'job' wheither it be Fire, water, air or earth and then work in that job for the rest of your life untill either you die or you die! simple as that.

Necrons, pretty much like Tyranids but are evil because the Lords still have a mind and a personality so THEY are evil but as a whole not much.

Orks, hey what can i say they're Orks

Imperium, well......they gotta survive so if this is the system they got [even though it could be improved] then it needs to be done and enforced.

Eldar, same as the imperium, they dont have much choice.

Now Dark Eldar well........there is evil! Torture for fun, practically living of it! Pirate attacks to enslave beings to build torture chambers in which they will be tortured in untill they die, be rescued or some other third thing. I've read that they tear out the victims heart and let it hang infront of them while keeping them alive for 12days! Seriously not even Chaos does that [and they do some nasty S%&t] so yeah Dark Eldar = Most Evil race!

Most game-universe have a divide, one side good, one side evil. In all of them chaos plays the evil part.
So its always Evil = chaos.

When you look at it really, the Imperium are the worst. Externally they seem no worse then the Tau or Eldar, they do some mean stuff, but are good.

However, they are the complete opposite. They may not be the sadistic evil of DE, or the horror of Chaos, but they are trying to eradicate all other races...COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY. They are like the Nazi's of the 41st millenium.

Without them, the whole thing wouldn't be in such a ferocious war.

Tyranids & Orks are both built to be killing machines so they aren't evil per se

I considered the Imperium but then thought against it because they are the way they are out of necessity. In 40k it's everyone trying to kill everyone, the Imperium is just really blunt about it in their indoctrination. What race in this game isn't trying to wipe out and/or enslave every other one? The Eldar and that's about it.

Let's face it, in the grim, dark blah blah everyone's kind of a d**k.

I was going for a Dante-esque view of evil. And besides, why should Chaos be less evil just because they worship something that is deemed to be more deserving than worshiping someone on a tomb/toilet. Also, isn't the reasoning for the Emperor being there justification for worship. Because I thought it was because he defeated Horus, a traitor, but sustained horrible injury.

Necron and Nids are the worst.

Necron are lead by C'tan, which are pretty evil. I mean, they convinced an entire race to give up their souls and free will so that their bodies could live forever as fighting death machines. Sounds pretty evil to me.

Nids just kill and kill and kill and kill. Their prime drive is kill and that is it. Destroy planet, take all biomass, move on until the entire galaxy is devoured.

Nids and Necron, evil and kickin' ass.....

The thing I see about Tyranids is that they do it out of necessity to survive. No more biomass means no more Nids, which drives the Nids to kill more. It is more of an annoying menace than evil.

Also, shouldn't evil be defined. I view it as that the thing being evil has the knowledge of what it is doing, knows of an alternative that is better, then doesn't care. Because honestly, all of the races could potentially be evil in a sense, but they all have plausible ramifications for what they are doing.

The Orks cannot help it in the slightest, they did not evolve or get themselves to the place where they are today, they were created. They are simply abiding by their original 'programming' to be utterly aggressive, it's in their nature.

I would definately say that the Tyranids are not evil, they are just as evil as a disease, they simply just follow their animal instincts. Possibly they have some more sinister scheme behind them with the hive minds (like the Necron and Tau do with the Ethereals and C'tan).. but that hasn't been made clear to us yet.

The Dark Eldar on the other hand are sadistic and twisted beyond comparison. They torture, enslave, and murder just for the plain fun of it, there is no more evil than them.. except for some of the chaos gods.

I also believe that Imperium is quite like NAZI germany at the decline of world war 2. So does that make them evil also?

LOL, it's quite a difficult question.. considering that there are not any 'nice' races out there to begin with.. quite a bleak outlook on the future..

chaos is evil, they kill people form humans to aliens, they worship chaos gods which are the really just emotions. the CSM are evil.
Dark Elder are also evil but they do it out nescesitiy. there entire socitey is built on the idea of "better you than me".
nercons didn't really know they were going to be enslaved by the C'tan besides the process dimmed there senses and probably dont know right from wrong anymore.
tyranids are just trying to survive... to survie forever
tau are trying to end all wars by bringing everyone into a single belief.
Elder are just trying to survive.
Orks are doing what they where programmed to do as said already
Imperium are bad but not evil, sure they lie through there teeth to the people but they are trying to protect humantity, sure they whant to kill everybody else but hey isnt everother race (not including elder)
So that is my idea of evil races
but there could be more evil races which dont have models for them... its a big universe.

Necrons voluntarily gave up their souls to follow the C'tan. They always desired long life and immortality, and in their weakness the C'tan saw an opening. Necrons are not Undead Living Metal death machines who will destroy all life just because the C'tan command it.

Necrons might not be evil anymore, but their leaders are.

Now with Nids, assuming the Hive Mind is sentient, they are evil. If they are just surviving they would not be considered evil at all, but since it is hinted at that the Hive Mind knows what it is doing. Then I consider them one of the greatest evils. Killing and assimilating races into the killing machine against their will. Evil.

Orks are not evil at all, just ignorant.

Eldar are actually one of the better groups.

Imperium is dark and bad yes, they are racist and kill all Xeno. But they are also attempting to survive with no clear cut leader. I cant blame them for being suspicious in the 40k Universe.

Tau, Ethereals are creepy. I do not like them, they got something up their sleeve.

With the others, Chaos and Dark Eldar, a little obvious they are made to be bad guys.

Dark Eldar who don't act evil/kill/maim/whatever will have their souls consumed by chaos cods. They do not have wraithbone/spirit stones/craftworlds to save their souls from being consumed so for some reason being really sick and twisted saves them from being consumed. That is what I mean by they are evil out of necessity, not by choice. They have to preform those types of acts in order to avoid consumption. Wether it justifies it or not is a different question.

The opposite of love is not hate, it is apathy.

The Tyranids are the worst in this. They do not serve a cause, they do not distiguish self, they do not negotiate, they are not moved by hope, passion, dedication, emotion, they do not know freedom or slavery... In a binary universe view, us and them, them is everything not Tyranid. They are clearly the worst.

Furthermore Tyranids are extra gallactic. That means they came from beyond the realm of the known. They may already have consumed evey other galaxy anmd every other dimension in all of creation for all the inhabitants of the 40k galaxy know. This also makes them the worst.

All the sentient races in warhammer should band together and exterminate and forever guard against the Tyranids, by fighting eachother they may simply be speeding along what is already innevitable.

I dont think the Tau are EVIL. They just want to have a presence in the universe. They believe they can bring something better to the galaxy and will stop at nothing to bring the Greater Good to everyone. they don't WANT to kill, they just want to spread the Greater Good. If that means killing (who they see as) evil ones who aim to deny others the Glory that is the Greater Good, then so be it. So they're not evil per se, just zealous.

I've also come to realise they're kinda communist. i should pick up some red paint :-P

Well they're not EXACTLY communist. but they have some similar ideas. I was just making a joke.

Either way I still maintain that the Tau are no more evil than any empire/nation/group that wants to expand. If you say anyone who tries to expand and says " join us or die" you pretty much condemn every empire EVER. (Greek, British, Persian, Alexander, etc)

In the short story Hive Fleet Horror by Barrington J. Bayley a pysker reads a tyranid mind and from that he finds out that tyranids are just evloved bugs that have only one instinct, to survive forever, they dont reconise emotions or intelligence. the nids take on biomass from new planets so they "regenerate" there own DNA so they can survive.
So i don't think the nids are evil, they wouldnt even reconise evil if it slaped them in the face, they would just eat it

Well, the Eldar may have made a Single Chaos God, but Orks created 2, and Humanity pretty much ensured 3 got as powerful as they are. While the other 3 were around pre humanity, it was only when Humanity started to flourish that they went into overdrive strength mode, as humans have an unusually high "resonance" in the warp relative to their psychic potential.

uhm... no

the choas gods (minus slanesh) came into being during the war of heaven where in the necrons and the races of the oldones were having at it.
near the end of the war, the old ones came to realise that in creating the super psychicly attuned races being born adn forced to fight the warp was becoming a seething mess.
the enslavers were sent forth, and they became known as the plague that forced the necrons back to thier tomb words.
the enslavers destoryed the old ones, and smashed apart most of the sentient races. (enslavers are daemons)

also; lets not forget that the deciever is set off the entire war in the gothic sector so as to do nothing more than destroy the last of the talismans of vaul (the blackstone fortresses) so it wouldnt have to worry about being beaten down.

the ctan and the necron slaves exist only to destory all life

What is evil? Before you can ask me to tell you what races are evil, you have to define evil for me.

As I see it, the only one race we can apply the term too, at least without a good definition, are humans. As that's the only one we have any real familiarity. To impose your moralistic views upon others, (and to judge them by yours) particularly alien species whose biology, neurology, culture and history are so completely different from your own, is pretty darn close to evil.

Orks - living according to their nature, and genetically programmed to do so, and essentially to not deviate either. Calling them evil is like calling a bear or wolverine evil. While they have rudimentary intelligence by standards of the other races, they have no ability to change their nature. Living according to your nature so if you are physically unable to change isn't evil. Sad perhaps. Being unwilling to evolve may be something we could call evil, being unable is pitiful. Doesn't mean you don't shoot them when they threaten you though.

Eldar, dark eldar - same race. Differing philosophies. Eldar have gone the aesthetic route, but are otherwise operating in flight or fight mode. They are xenophobic, but as every race seems to have a trace of that, it's easily forgivable. Considering that they are a dying race (per the fluff) and there is a god waiting to devour their souls when they die, one can also forgive a certain level of hostility and suspicion. It's a survival mechanism. Every other race they encounter, and quite a bit of their own race, seem out to kill them. So you either run away (which doesn't seem to be working), or you turn and fight. They have the potential to evolve, but are currently fighting extinction.
Dark Eldar - Yes they seek to avoid their own annihilation by sacrificing others. But this is survival. If an aliens pain and death will appease the god trying to consume their soul, and stave off their own mortality, are we to tell them they should commit suicide and not take those steps? If so, at this point you are making a moral judgment that one species is more inherently valuable, which sounds more evil to me than doing what you need to to survive. Oh, and someone mentioned the BDSM stuff, just because your not into something doesn't mean it's evil, just not for you. Otherwise, don't knock it till you try it.

Tyranid, as mentioned are a hive mind whose only goal is to expand. Not as a intellectual goal, but as an instinctive drive. Eat, reproduce, when resources are gone, move on. Rinse, repeat. If they were smart enough to realize the eventual result of such unchecked behavior was that they would eventually strip the universe of everything to eat, guaranteeing their own extinction via starvation, and chose to do so anyhow, then it might qualify as evil if they didn't limit themselves. Might. But as is, locusts aren't evil when they swarm and eat everything, they're just animals. Doesn't mean you don't eliminate them if you can.

Tau - Well, do the ends justify the means? They have committed some things that we might consider atrocities. But then, so have humans. If there's an intelligent race that is in opposition to us, vastly outnumbers us, is very aggressive and has no interest in letting anything that's not them live, reacting violently seems to be a very appropriate reaction. And a concentration camp? Well, they've pretty much been told it's us or them, and that they can not capitulate as they will be eliminated. Considering the population differences, and the afformentioned policies, it's only logical that if you can use the enemies citizens to strengthen your own, that you do so, and that you don't worry so much if the ones you are using die. It doesn't really benefit you to keep them alive. Ruthless efficiency is not necessarily evil, it's just something a little harder than most people are comfortable with.

Chaos - religious fanatics. While such have done a lot of harm throughout our history, the persons doing it have all believed it was for something good. Foolish and misguided is not evil, just stupid. Again, something that you should probably stamp out if you can, the unfortunate thing about attacking a religious group is that it tends to make a lot of people who can find themselves identifying with the religion to become somewhat fanatical themselves.

Necron - may have been evil. They chose to start a galactic policy of xenocide because of jealousy. Not a good reason typically speaking. They, with the humans, stand out as the only ones who aren't lashing out because it's their nature, but by choice, a conscious decision. Or at least they were. As they aren't talking now, and have been subsumed into mechanical bodies with mental imprints on a mechanical matrix, one can argue that they really don't have much choice any more. My computer isn't evil, even if it does suck away my time in great, heaping amounts.

That pretty much leaves the imperium, as you're seperating them from chaos. Can choose otherwise. Can be welcoming. Can overthrow those in control who are keeping them down and the race stagnant and from evolving for TEN THOUSAND YEARS. And they choose not too. That's the closest thing to what I view as evil as I've seen in the game. Too have the choice, everything to gain by trying as well as some hardship in the trying, but to choose not too.

Immaterium =/= Chaos Entirely

Chaos has 4 gods. (Technically 5)

There are other gods such as Gork and Mork and the Emperor.

Chaos gods are effected by emotions, murder, pain, and death.

Gods such as Gork and Mork are effected by how many people believe in them.

Which is why Gork and Mork are so badass and they can roflpwn the chaos gods, because there are so many Orks.

The Emperor is just an incredibly powerful psychic entity. He was the first Human psyker and still the most powerful to date. Hes not a true "god" really, but his powers are godlike since he can singlehandedly hold off the Chaos Gods in order to keep the Astronomicon going. While his body is pretty much withered and dead, he is still helping Humanity with the Emperors Tarot and the Astronomicon. Now technically he would be a Warp Entity in a way.

So really, powerful warp entity =/= Chaos God all the time

Actually, it looks like you didn't quite read the entire post. At no point did I say welcome them with open arms or submit to them. I said that I don't feel correct in making a moral judgement concerning the behavior or animals, or aliens that I can't truly understand. It doesn't mean that you don't fight them if they're agressive.

I don't need to label my foes as evil to make myself feel good about fighting them. True, I don't descriminate. But I guarantee I want to survive and thrive at least as much as you do, so while I can be accepting that you value your race, culture, etc., as it's yours, don't try to foist it off on me or hurt me because your philosophy tells you to. I guarantee the results will be, unpleasant.

Eldar are selfish poofters. They'll sacrifice entire innocent worlds just to preserve their own lives. That is outright evil. I mean, they claim to be protecting the galaxy from Chaos and the Necrons, but they're just trying to buy themselves more time, which will be wasted.

And Idranel deserved to die. She was the lamest Farseer ever, because
1. She used MIND BULLETS.
2. She had no boob armour, which was a great disappointment to /tg/ and myself.

It is the right of all organisms to spread. We assimilate the natural world when we eat and then use that food to provide energy to have more of us, feed our offspring and so on. In a very real sense we are transforming the matter of plants and other animals into more humans. To me the Dark Eldar are more evil because they inflict suffering and pain without reason and because they still have that eldar mindset that created the chaos gods. The followers of chaos are like drug addicts, they're sick and do evil things because they're sick, not because they're evil.
Tau, they're bringing what they think is a better way of living to the galaxy, the fact that they seem to be the major beneficiaries of this generosity I'm sure is just coincidence. I suppose if anything they are more like old human empires like the Roman and British empires.

They are evil in the way I would say (don't hit me) Nazi Germany was. The vast majority of Tau Believe what they believe because they have been saturated with propaganda from Day One. They commit atrocities in the name of the "Greater Good" because the Ethereal's Tell them too, who know that it's all a bunch of rubbish and have to resort to clandestine methods to subdue unruly races (See the Vespid Conspiracy for example)

They are evil in the way I would say (don't hit me) Nazi Germany was. I think of the Imperium as more like the nazis with its philosophies of purging the heretics, xenos etc. Everthing is done for the benefit of mankind as a whole with a single glorified leader. From what I've learnt of national socialism, the imperium fits closer to that way of thinking than communism or whatever else. Italian fascism would suit Tau as it differs from nazism in being for the state (which gives room for xenos to participate) whereas nazism is for the people (which gives no room for xenos to exist amongst the people).
