Imperial Guard Heavy weapon base trouble

So I got an imperial guard heavy weapon box. Not wanting to waste the good weapons I bought enough IG bits to make use of 3 heavy bolters, 3 autocannons, and 3 lascannons; all of them with loaders. Now here is the problem.

I put the gunners on 40mm bases with they're loaders on a separate 25mm base. I did this for simplicity's sake when it came to removing wounds from the heavy weapon team, and making it so they could actually occupy a building's balcony, etc without any trouble.

Now with the new codex stating they are a single model with 2 wounds, would I have to buy 60mm bases and re-base all of my heavy weapons? Was I wrong to put them on separate bases in the first place?

Well, the short answer is yes and maybe. The old heavy teams were provided on separate bases or no base at all. The new codex is very clear about the units now.

As said, the short answer is Yes.
Anyone who says "oh but they are on the base they came with" should be ignored. The current model has 1 large base, so you use one large base. If you are retrofitting old models onto a new base, may I suggest the use of magnets to affix them. Not only is it cheap and fast, but it lets you remove the loader to keep track of the wounds!

Imperial Guard Heavy weapon base trouble

First, GWs current stance on bases is to base them with what they came with. Well, this is a BS thing to say because IG heavy weapons are still coming on a multitude of bases, making it redundant to say "base with what they came with" since some of their models actually come with no base for some models at all! My opinion, and the opinion of a lot of Guard players, is to either rebase them on a 60mm, or leave them as-is and keep them in base contact with each other.

I, myself, am rebasing all my Guard onto 25mm when I can fit them on one, or 25mm with a Calvary base extension that is scenic only (does not count for wounding), then keeping the loader as close as possible, terrain dictating. Basically because there is no reason other than GW's strange choice to move to 60mm "scenic" bases for heavy weapons, which makes placing IG heavy weapons, quite literally, anywhere extremely difficult and is generally slowed (meaning backwards for those of you who don't know what "slow" properly means).

I have seen people try to use other mediums for bases, and unless you are planning to invest more time than it is probably worth, it just ends up looking bad, but it is doable.

Imperial Guard Heavy weapon base trouble

Well reguardless of the base. The size of you base really no longer provides any tactical difference like before. This was a long standing issue with thier HW teams which has now been resolved. There is no more discussing it and yes NOW the concept of LOADER and SHOOTER exist whereas before it was all fluff with no real rule.

Re:Imperial Guard Heavy weapon base trouble

I ended up taking a saw (the one you put on the end of a drill for cutting holes) to make new bases out of high density particle board. This actually worked great, but you need to sand or file down the edges.

...or you can buy the right size bases for 3/$12 LOL

I recast bases, its easy. Bikes are in the exact same situation with the new oblong/old square/lack of bases.

As GW doesn't sell them in individual bags anymore...

Get a Magic Sculpt recasting kit at Hobby Lobby, they are only about $20 and you can make as many bases as you need.
