Quick overview: I got interested in WH40k a couple of years ago because I loved the look of the miniatures and painting them. At the time a number of my friends played WH40k. I decided to join them and bough an Eldar army (see list below). Unfortunately a short time after I had purchased my army a number of my friends quit playing and as a result the entire army ended up in a box in the Shed.

After digging the box out a couple of weeks ago I decided that I would like to actually paint and play with the army. The majority of the miniatures are partially assembled and undercoated (white) and the remainder are still in their original packaging.

With such a large number of miniatures and so much to learn it seems a rather daunting task and I have no idea where to start.

I am hoping that I can get some feedback/advice from some of the experienced Eldar players in regards to what would be the best way to utilize the miniatures I have to assemble and army that I can comfortably sit down and paint and ultimately play with competitively.

NOTE: I don't have the new codex yet (should be in the post any day)

However, for a competitive list, you are probably short on some models.
A mech army needs lots of Serpents, Falcons and Fire Prisms.
A Wraithguard-heavy force needs at least 10 Wraithguard and 8-10 Harlies for counter-strike.

For a fun list, you can field pretty much whatever you like. Thats exactly what i was hoping to do, i want to build a competitive army without having to buy a lot additional minatures

if i was to build something from this collection i would run with something like this:

2000 points eldar:

HQ:

Avatar

Farseer w/ Doom, Guide, Fortune, Rune of Witnessing, Spirit Stones

Elites:

5 Wraithguard
5 Fire Dragons

Troops:

6 Pathfinders
10 Guardians, Starcannon, warlock, conceal
10 Guardians, Starcannon, warlock, conceal
10 Dire Avengers w/ exarch, bladestorm WaveSerpent

Fast:

8 Warp Spiders w/ Exarch, dual spinners and blades, withdrawl

Heavy:

Wraithlord, flamers, missile launcher and brightlance
3 dark reapers w/ exarch tempest launcher, crack shot
falcon, holofields, stones

this is a rough 2k list, tweak the skimmer weapons as you want. the fire dragons ride in the falcon. a basic battleplan would be have the farseer close to the avatar, alos babysitting the wraithguard. fire support comes from the guardians, the pathfinders need to be in cover. warp spiders can hunt troops and weak rear armor as well, the wraithlord and falcon making spot AT matched with pinpoint insertion with the fire dragons.

i havent used eldar in a while, and my lists were always on the odd side, but good luck none th eless.

Jumping in the deep end with a 2000 army looks interesting but i think i might try a smaller force say around 500-1000 points so i can get a feel for Eldar in the current environment.

Here is a really simple and easy to use 1000pt list that has some staying power to it. A monster slog, lots of units, and some anti tank backup. Unsure exactly what you have on your lords so just put what is normally used. Basically march up the middle, conceal and Fortune powers combined can save you a lot of hits. I will use the 2 lists as a starting points form my amry, im still waiting or the codex to arrive so will make a final army list once i have had a read. Also get more harlequins and expand aspect squads to match with pheonix lord i.e. 10 howling banshees with Jain Zaar
ANd i back up super cow's idea of scatter lasers, especially on warwalkers. An optimized core at the 1750-2000 point range would likely consist of:

HQ:Avatar
HQ:Eldrad
Elite: 6-10xHarlequin
Troops: 10xWraithguard w/ Spiritseer(Becomes troops at 10)
Heavy:3xWraithlord (ideally with lances+missile launchers)

Eldar are normally weak as fak, but the concept is that you're taking all the tough units and swamping your opponent with them. The downsides are that you're a bit slow on foot, and that you'll be relying a bit heavily on long ranged fire (36"+) to do the dirty work. You can take skimmers to compensate, but you risk dividing your army.

This is a defensive type of list, but it punishes at close range, and can soak up a few hits. T3 troops are a liability, but you have little other choice to fill out your troop selections.
