Role Models

Rented Role Models (Paul Rudd & Sean William Scott comedy) on DVD the other night. It was mostly hit and miss humour, but all the "hits" came from making fun of LARPers (Paul Rudd is charged with taking a young nerd under his wing and gets dragged into a world of hitting people about the head with foam swords).

As I watched, it occured to me that the rip taking was more affectionate rather than vindictive and there were enough small details to make me wonder whether the script writers had some experience of what they were making fun of. A highlight was when Christopher Minze-plasse killed the King who threw his toys out of the pram and refused to "die" insisting he had cast a spell of protection at the last second.

The end of season epic battle organised over the internet had the feeling of an actual event as well. I've seen small groups of LARPers on Southampton Common, but never anything more than five or six. Has anybody else seen the film? Do US LARPers really go to this much trouble with their costumes? And do they ever gather in epic numbers over in the States? Surely this would be a great spectator sport?

Well Darkon(A documentary about larping),had a few big battle sequences. The most notable being the battle at the end, which was fought on a soccer pitch, and yes there were people standing taking pics with camera phones,so I guess it would make a nice spectator sport.

it made it onto Fox news.

Re:Role Models

I actually used to LARP and I have to say... If you can get past the schtick of being "funny looking" I suggest you give it a try. If it's ran right it's a great amount of exercise and it lets you "escape" the work week. It's not Darkon, but a ton of the guys I used to play w/ are in a movie called Weekend Warriors. Watch the movie and you may have a different view on LARPers in the end.

-J.
