painting black leather

Has anyone ever come up with a good way to paint black leather?
I've tried a few different processes but haven't really come up with anything that i like.

First i tried basecoating the mini black then drybrushing a very little bit of a dark grey to highlight the leather, but it just kinda ends up looking like the leather is dusty and not light reflecting from the highlights.

Then I tried to paint the area a dark grey and wash it with a black wash, but that just ends up looking like grey cloth with dark shadows.

So how do you paint black leather?

To do black leather properly , you have to be pretty much be as good painter as people that does NMM .

The next solution is to use glossy black paints to simulate the sheen / reflection .

A few issue back in the WD they did a really good step buy step of the AoBR Ork Boss and they did black leather with brown for the highlights. It sounded odd when I read it but it works really well. I dont rememebr the exact issue but it wasnt too far back. I suggest dropping by your local shop and see if they still have an issue around.

US WD350 with the Stompa on the cover has an AoBR Warboss painting article. Though glancing through it I don't see anything about painting leather so maybe there is another article somewhere. It does mention stark highlighting makes material look like leather.

Even in the US Army, a trick for really shiny boots was to use a hint of brown polish. It does help, it really deepens the black.

Anyway, a satin varnish coat helps it stand out from cloth if that's the look you're going for.
