Re:working in GW

GW relies on the workforce being fanbois and this justifies them paying total peanuts for their labours. The manager of our local store earns less than the photocopying grunts in my office.

Further to that, when you go to work for them, they put you through some very vigourous testing and you become subject to some (as I understand it) very difficult sales targets and constant reprogramming.

MadDokGrotsnik was perhaps the most supportive and vigorous defender of Games Workshop on this forum (mercifully he seems to be cooling towards them lately) and he didn't pass the many application tests because he wasn't enthusiastic enough...

If you want into the hobby as a career, set you goals alittle higher, open your own shop or get into design or something. Redshirt (or whatever colour) is frankly not a thing a young person should see as an end goal.

working in GW

Remember it isn't all sitting around painting your models and playing pick up games.

You have to paint the store armies and teach kids how to play and paint.
Also the discounts the staff used to get have been cut back over the last 5 years or so.

I crunched the numbers and found that working an average paying job and paying full price at GW still puts you ahead of the usual GW worker.
Also it is a bugger to get to full time work with GW, here in Oz many workers are stuck in casual or part time for a couple of years before a full time place opens up.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
In saying all that however if I won the lottery I'd offer to work for the studio for free and give up being a doctor.

working in GW

I've been a staffer myself and known many ex-staffers. It's my experience that the majority of Staff members leave the hobby for at least 6 months to a year after leaving the job. I'd say about 50% of those never came back to the hobby.

It's a real passion killer when it comes to your own hobby and I had little enthusiasm for and painting or gaming of my own after a day wearing the red shirt.

The money is awful. Now the discount has been robbed from the staff as well I can't think of a positive benefit to working for the company. You can forget management as well the salaries for managers are nothing short of appalling, far less than even the lowliest of office workers.
