Questions regarding Foundation Paints (Brushes too)

Foundation is simply a high pigment version of acrylic paints. You MUST water them down on your palette before use. They are great for your colored basecoats after priming. Great coverage and nice selection of colors. But remember, WATER THEM DOWN.

Questions regarding Foundation Paints (Brushes too)

Okay, noted. I'm gonna pick up a few foundation paints in that case. Anything else I should know about them?

Also, I've been told to use Sable brushes, but i've seen some people using white synthetic brushes too. Which are the best? (I won't be getting paintbrushes in my paint order, only locally)

Mechrite Red is the one I couldn't do without, it's a lovely non-garish red tone on its own, and a good basecoat for reds and oranges painted over black primer. The paints' most annoying feature is that they can dry on the palette very quickly, so you need to bear that in mind when thinning them (a wet palette would help here, as would retarder).

Brush-wise, you're usually best off with natural hair, synthetic brushes have a shorter lifespan in my experience.

Questions regarding Foundation Paints (Brushes too)

If your paint is drying too fast, there are ways to work around that.

If you're getting your brushes at an art supply store- you can also pick up some 'Acrylic Drying Retardant' it slows the evaporation and keeps the paint wet longer (mind the finger prints!)

Hmm, that sounds like a plan. I've been having a bit of trouble with blending.
Should I just dab in a bit of the Retardant in the paint itself? Or just on my palette? And what is a wet palette exactly? Sorry if these are obvious questions, i'm just new painting all together

Questions regarding Foundation Paints (Brushes too)

I just add a drop on my palette if its drying before I can use it.

A wet palette is a fancy pallette that involves something like a sponge to hold moisture- and then you keep it in an airtight container when not painting. Its advanced kit, not something many mini painters really use. It good for people that hand mix custom colors and dont want them drying out. Otherwise, a regular palette works fine.
