Some Ponderings....Razorback Rush?....with Assault Cannons for Bacon Cheesy Goodness!

Ahoy hoy folks!

I've been pondering a strategy that hadn't really occurred to me until fairly recently. Thumbing through the Space Marine Codex I see now that Razorbacks can now be equipped with TL-Assault Cannons for a grand total price of 75 points per razorback (I know I know, slowpoke I be...) . Now while this is a bit pricey, I had a thought of fielding say....5 of them flanked by either predators or Land Raiders, with Land Raiders fielding the forward left and right flanks and the razorbacks bringing up the rear center, sort of "reverse flying v" formation, to maximize their field of fire while still providing some sort of limited protection to their sides. Crunching the numbers that's 20 TL Str 6 Ap 4 Shots being poured out which could indeed put quite a bit of hurt out on infantry and heavy infantry models.

I remember doing this on a smaller scale with two of them and some land raiders against some tau not too long ago and while they were either flanked by terrain or the land raiders, they chewed the Fire Warriors and Kroot that dared cross into their range.

What do you all think about this? The TL-Asscannon Razorback seems like a cheap bullet hose with admittedly shoddy armor, but the TL part of it does seem nice and 75 points is pretty manageable all in all.

I'd like to hear your thoughts! And thanks for your considerations!

I don't have much experience fielding them but looking at the cost they're very cost efficient as are the TwinLinked Lascannon.

Here is the cool thing though with Razorbacks with twin Lascannon you can use your tactical squad w/ a Lascannon to screen the razorback.

Yes , troops can screen tanks with Ten Marines you can place the Marines in Cover and your Razorback behind it. Giving them both cover saves.

Twin Assault cannon rush is cool especially if you add in Landspeeders.

The Problem with that is yes they are 75 points but at minimum you will pay 140 points for the squad.

I dunno yet I would like to see a army around it but it does seem rather pricey.

Assault cannons Nice but its on AV 11 ... now 40pts for the standard razor back with heavy bolter ... well that's different. You could easily fit 5-12 of them in a list (200-480pts).

it's still pretty cost efficient as it is twinlinked. For Comparison a Landspeeder although very different has AV10 and a non twinlinked Assault Cannon.

Where Razorbacks really get their points though is from that twinlinked lascannon its way undercost. For Comparison.

Ten Man Tactical Squad w/ Lascannon ; Twin Lascannon Razorback = 255

Ten Man Devastator Squad w/ 4 Lascannons 1 at Ballistic 5 = 310 points

5 Man Devastator w/ 1 Ballistic 5 = 230

Its just incredibly cost efficient. Also, add to that it is immune to ST4 and 5 Needs Glancing on a 6 then you get into the STR6 or Higher reliably used to destroy it.

Another thing to benefit which I actually prefer if I use them is the Twinlinked Plasma and Lascannon ; First off its seperate a weapon destroyed result is going to give your opponent the option of destroying the plasma or the Lascannon. If it stands steal it can deliver 2 shots at 24 inches that are STR7 and 9 respectively.

Its just all around the better choice imo.

I am a fan of the Heavy Bolter. Combat Squad a Flamer/PFist to ride in it with a Lascannon to support it while it is on the move and it is just a cheap firebase to support the primary purpose of the mobile squad. Great home for smaller Sternguard units, too. At least, just my thoughts on it.

If you think that's great, check out the Lascannon/T-L Plasmagun variety. Death to light armor and MEQs, and according to the wording, they are two separate weapons and destroyed separately by 3's on the chart.

TL assault cannon is pretty sweet, but I dont feel like it increases the effectiveness of the vehicle in proportion to the cost. It is definately better than the bolters, but I dont think its twice as good. I guess maybe it depends on the matchup, but against the horde orks i seem to spend most of my time against, the bolters are great at half the price.

I agree with the other posters that TL las is a really nice choice as well.

I havent played with las/plas before I am not sure how good I think that one really is. Since they count as separate weapons you dont get owned as hard by weapon destroyed, but at the same time you dont get to shoot/move at full effect either.

I too have been pondering these TWL Assault cannons for my marines. Seems to me the S6 rending 4 is the best part turning the shot into ap2 or making a shot at a vehicle even more deadly.

Re:Some Ponderings....Razorback Rush?....with Assault Cannons for Bacon Cheesy Goodness!

Much prefer to run Razorbacks with heavy bolters and then spend the points on the squad for weapons. A Sgt with a combi weapon (flamer or melta) plus another flamer or melta makes a nice cargo, especially with the other half of the squad playing fire support with a Msl launcher or las cannon.

If I upgrade a razorback its going to be to a TL las cannon to add just that much more AT.

The TL assault cannon almost doubles the cost but doesnt double the value of the razorback.

Sliggoth

I love the look of Assault Cannons on RBs and pondered equiping them as such when the new dex dropped. Somebody hammered out the math and showed the LC/PG was better overall than the AC.

I'm sticking with HB's since I prefer more shots, at longer range, for a few points more.
