Magnetizing bases

I'm thinking that the best way to do this would be to just glue a small neodymium magnet to the base of my models and glue down a piece of tin or something to the movement trays. Does anyone have a better suggestion besides paying a buck a pop and having to rebase every model in all of my armies by switching to the GF9 magnetic bases? Also, what size magnet is ideal for this project? I'm thinking that the 1/8" diameter x 1/32" thickness would probably be perfect

Actually, that sounds like a great idea with the magnets. And certainly cheaper.

I'm thinking that size magnet is also fine. I have that size and got them from Amazon.com, 100 for $8US and they are much stronger than I expected (About a pound of force each if I remember correctly) so I'd think just to hold your army on a movement tray would be fine.

Good Luck! I smell a tutorial.

Magnetizing bases

For plastic models, why not just use fridge magnets? A plastic space marine isn't much heavier than a stamped and painted metal thingy. Plus, they're readily and cheaply available, and you get a pile of metal or plastic thingies as well.

For the movement trays, ferrous metal would work best, so maybe get hold of some thin sheet steel cut to size. That could be expensive if you don't have the tools to cut it yourself, though.
Of course, a possible solution is oven baking trays. They're thin, light, and magnets stick to them.

Magnetizing bases

Fridge magnets suck. They're too thick and they're not strong at all. They're also about the same price as neodymium. I want something that's small enough to fit in the base. I don't want the base to sit on top of it. Tin sheets are cheap and easy to cut with tin snips. Magnets stick to it well enough.

Magnetizing bases

I use these magnets:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13518

They're rather shallow, so I pad out the bottom of the base with a small metal washer. The washer goes right over the dimple on standard bases. Slotted bases are tougher, you usually have to scratch out the copyright on the base to fit it in.

I just placed an order for 100 3mm x 1.5mm and 100 6mm x 1.5mm magnets so once I get them I'll try a few different ideas. If they work then I'll post up a tutorial. 200 magnets for $13 shipped. Not bad.
