Perhaps drybrushing some black on the end of the flamer to create the ashy residue that builds up

Im not sure about your main colour but you could work in some battle damage if you had a colour on the shoulder pads. is it because they lack color other than black , metals, brown, green,
because they dont have checks and dags
( i can paint them but dont want them on my orks)

Also, if you dont like the checks and whatnot, then dont put them on. Its your Orks man lol. I think Ork metal should be covered in rust,so I paint them that way.
