Re:what glue to use on metal models?

Sorry mate I live in Australia so im not sure if you'll have the same stuff.

You can use the green stuff that GW supplies tough I have not tried this myself so I can not guarantee its strength, HOWEVER...

What you need to do is go down to your local hardware store and look in the paint section or putty section for "Two Part Epoxy Putty/resin"
There are different brandsbut if you can find one called "Knead it" I can practically guarantee it adhesive properties.

No matter the brand it should tell you if it is adhesive, oh and try to find a water proof or metal putty as these are obviously better than wood putty or normal putties.

Hope that helps.

Re:what glue to use on metal models?

I usually use zap a gap, a hobby grade super glue on most of my models. It worked fine on my techmarine with servo harness. However, on larger metal models (heavy warjacks in warmachine for example) I've found a little green stuff works great. You'll likely have to do a little filing after it hardens completely, but otherwise it's done great for me.

what glue to use on metal models?

The answer is not to be found in glue, it is to be found in pins.

You need a solid mechanical connection before applying any sort of bonding agent. If you don't have this, then the glue will not hold. It may appear to for a short period of time, but it will come apart.

Buy a pin vice, pin everything, and you'll find that the brand of glue you use doesn't make a huge difference.

Agreed wholeheartedly on the pinning angle. Even the GW pin vice isn't too bad. After that I would use JB Kwik for big metal models. It's a steel based epoxy putty that dries in about 5 -10 minutes. Once you have pinned and used JB Kwik, it will NEVER come apart!

Superglue + greenstuff obviates the need for pinning. The bond is stronger than the pewter. A lot less work too.

-get out a little less greenstuff than would fill the joint
-roll it into a ball and place it in the joint
-add superglue
-press pieces together

It's all about the science of superglue. The smaller the gap, the tighter the bond. Greenstuff fills the gap, superglue locks it all down. Tiny spritz of water in there if you want it to set immediately.

Ahhh not seeing the wood from the trees...

Looking back at the original post, he says he's having trouble glueing the thunderfire....

Before you even attempt to glue that bad boy... you'll need to file the heck out of it first, as the pieces are a realllly bad fit.... give that a go first, so that all parts are nice and flush.. then hit it with the superglue, and or pins...

Zap a gap or any super glue available in a model shop will suffice..

For bigger things, two part epoxies all the way.. still with a little bit of pinning, to make sure they hold together while the glue sets..

what glue to use on metal models?

I had GREAT success using a mix of super glue and gorilla glue on my Killa Kans. It works GREAT! Gorilla Glue would bond an icicle to an oil slick but it takes so damn long to set. That's wherethe super glue comes in. The Super Glue holds it together long enough for hte gorilla glue to work its magic.

You can find both at any hardware store. Gorilla Glue is like $5 and change.

also, to the pinning comment, that you need to be a master modeler to pin a model... That person obviously has never tried it. Pinning is not only one of the easiest modeling things you can do but it's also fun! I love drilling gun barrels.

I totally suggest investing in a pin vice. It's some $13 USD and will serve you very well for yeras. Plus you can drill gun barrels which improve the model SOOOO much!
