As for making a point on the brush, there is not better substance for this than your own saliva (which is quite sticky and will hold the point as it dries).

Simply put go and get yourself a small jar of Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver...

It works great for both of your needs, it's cheap, and can be found in pretty much any arts or crafts store.

Over the course of a painting session, capillary action will draw a small amount of paint up towards the metal finial. This is bad as it accumulates there and as it dries will force the bristles apart destroying the tip and your brush.

Also, never dip your bristles into the paint more than 1/2 way, and don't let the paint dry on the bristles.

Another budget tip: Use your old budget brushes for the dry brushing. If you have brushes of different sizes which I do, you will end up with different sized dry brushes for pin point accuracy. Like dry brushing just the rivets or tiny corners on the Dreadnaught. The different sizes give you more control on where you want the effect to end up. I do not recommend this while the brush is still wet. It can cause the bristles to mildew and mold and ruin the brush. This is especially true if you only paint once or twice a week.

Second/third/what ever on the Masters brush cleaner...it cleans of course, but you can also shape the point while you have some clean soap on it and then let it dry. This can help you to retain a nice point over time. Plenty of appropriate products to clean with.

When you draw your brush tip through your paint (on a pallete) roll it slightly, which will reform the tip on a round brush...
