What kind of pattern do you want?

It is always helpful to have in mind what you want, as getting something that looks good is more important than just picking something because you know how to do it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_camouflage_patterns

I think you will probably want something that is more of a splinter pattern than flecktarn, something like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M90_(camouflage) in whatever colours you choose (usually 3-4 shades from the same area of the spectrum, from light to dark).

I would use the most saturated colour you were planning on using as the base, then go for a less saturated colour to make a few stripes, followed by a much darker colour to go over the top to produce the majority of the stripes.

Much like the camo here:

One easy way is to lay down blu tack on the model where you dont want the paint to go and squash it into a camo pattern, paint around it and then take it off, wait till dried and then repeat until the model is about covered.

This works VERY well for tanks!

How to paint a camo marine?

The thing to remember about doing camouflage is that the main purpose is to remove all detail of the camouflaged subject. So it is kind of tricky on Space Marines, as even non-camo models can turn into blobs on the table. A good idea is to use the pattern to your advantage by making the lighter colors appear near the edges.

Camouflage patterns attempt to make a 3D object appear 2D and blend in with the background or the ground. This is usually accomplished by first making deep areas appear higher by affecting their shading; normally darker/shaded areas (pits like the eyes and neck) are colored brighter, "lifting them", while "higher" zones are painted darker, areas in between associating more with the background colors.

For to make a camo model still BANG, I would experiment with doing the opposite of all that. Paint high areas lighter, and deep areas darker. The pattern will still look camouflaged, but the details will still pop.

Re:How to paint a camo marine?

Tigerstripes or Digital would look best on a Space Marine, but if you decide to go with a Flecktam/speckled pattern, I found a good way to apply it is to soak a cheap new toothbrush in hot water to soften it a bit, then to slightly fray the bristles (Note, you want to retain most of the elasticity of the bristles). put some paint on a pallette and then rub the excess off the brush, leaving a thin wetcoat on the bristles.

Then lighly drag your finger across the brush so that it sprays a light speckling of paint across the surface of the mini. Repeat until you end up with the balanced displacement you're aiming for. While painting speckling with a toothbrush isn't the best for a display mini, it works really well for tabletop units, especially if you're trying to get them done soon.
