What is 'ard boys like?

I'm going to my FLGS to participate in the first round of 'ard boys. It has been some time since i've been to a miniatures tournament, and the last one I was at counted painting, comp, and sportsmanship as part of the scores.

On one hand, I'm going to be able to bring an army I've been able to be very "selective" about, because I haven't had to worry about bringing only painted models. On the other, I'm curious about the attitude of the players.

In your experience, do most people seem to have a good time at 'ard boys, or does everyone turn into an instant douche in the absence of soft scores?

Maybe instant douche is going to far but people are there to win. This is not a "celebration of the hobby" but a "who can bring it" type tournament. If you play IG and forget your orders at the start of the shooting phase don't expect me to let you do them. If you are playing Eldar and start moving one model before you use your farseer powers then they don't use them that turn.

My best advice is to play to win, be fair, and don't cheat. Make sure you follow all the rules, don't stall for time, and measure correctly. Also make sure to clarify all terain before the game begins. Last thing you want is to be having to roll a difficult terrain test on that hill you thought was open ground on the bottom of turn 6.

I would say instant douche.

most tournies have a level of douchery that is acceptable, but 'Ard Boyz was designed to be the king of douche-tournies.

I played in rounds 1 and 2 of 'Ard Boyz last year in the tri-state area and didn't come across any jerkoffs. On the other hand, I've come across a couple in more "normal" tournaments.

People have a lot of preconceptions about 'Ard Boyz and usually they're wrong. TFG who you run into at 'Ard Boyz is the same TFG that's going to be playing in local tournaments, it's not like they save it up all year just for this event.

Re:What is 'ard boys like?

I wouldn't say that the 'Ard Boyz events necessarilly breed duchery, just that duchery can and many times is present. Having participated in both the qualifiers and regionals for 40k and fantasy 'Ard Boyz in the past I can say that the enviroment I'vs generally seen is mainly described as professional. No "oh it's o k that you forgot to shoot with that unit, go ahead and shoot them now", but that sort of competitive level should be expected in this style tournament. That being said the only thing to fear is TFG who doesn't know his army well enough to play it effectivly and quickly at that points scale, really bogs the game down. That aside the 'Ard Boyz are a fun competitive tournament, but I wouldn't go to them more then once or twice a year.
