ESPLOSION!!!!!!!!!

Hey everyone I'm Ben ^_^ first post. and i good a doosy of a question...

Has anyone ever seen saving private ryan? remember the part where they're assaulting the beach and there's explosions going off all the time in the sand from mortars. I want to try and emulate that same effect of the sand being blown upwards from an explosion.

My first idea to achieve this would perhaps be using some wire and wraping steel wool around it, forming the shape of the explosion, then PVA glue it and sand it.

What's your thoughts? How would you do this?

Hmm, that sounds interesting. I tried recently making smoke with some cotton wool, washed with Chaos Black, and secured with a cocktail stick into an upright pillar. Looked gak.

I'll have a look into your idea.

sA

ESPLOSION!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm it seems to be a good idea though i'm not sure about using the tree stuff because it looks like the green shows through still even after painting. I'm thinking it would happen if it was bent slightly.

I want to put this into my duel/diorahma entree in this years australian games day this is a little bit of action going on in the background. i'm picturing a imperial guard morta team jumping out of the way of a stick bomb explosion.

If you want i can post a pic of my idea lol drawn very roughly and quickly on paint but it'll give you an idea of what i'm doing for this entree

ESPLOSION!!!!!!!!!

I would say Ghidorah's blast markers are the way to go. If you are worried about the green showing through, coat it with PVA glue and throw some sand on it.

The diorama idea sounds really, really cool. But it will only look good if you execute the idea properly..

Make sure you get a few dead guardsmen lying around clutching wounds like in Saving Private Ryan.

Have fun.

Cheers,

Jack.

Re:ESPLOSION!!!!!!!!!

If that's going to be based and raining mix some sand up with some PVA glue and paint it onto the base. It will dry looking like mud, add some flock etc for grass and it should look good, maybe try making some puddles as well. Don't make the models look shiny all over, but some will probably need a gloss varnish to make them look wet. Basically just don't over do it with the varnish and it will look good.

Layout looks good as well.

ESPLOSION!!!!!!!!!

That Mad Ben Kid wrote:...tree stuff because it looks like the green shows through still even after painting. I'm thinking it would happen if it was bent slightly.

Nope. No green shows through. There's none showing through in these pics. As long as you prime it thoroughly, you should have no issues with green showing. That's why I mentioned that it takes a LOT of primer to cover it.

Also, in the event that you do miss a spot or two, you can simply water down some black paint and brush it on the culprit area(s). With the primer and the thinned black paint, the tree foam absorbs the paint and it dries nice and rigid. I had a point of one of these "arms" break off and there was barely any green on the inside, it had absorbed that much primer. Then, as a bonus, it was super easy to glue back on.

Ghidorah
