Re:Necron killing tactics

Well really the best way to beat Necrons is to get around the WBB rule. So power weapons are a must, and any weapon where the STR is double or more the toughness of the necron. So for warriors its STR8 or better. So rockets launchers are good for that.
I wouldnt be afraid of the Necron Lord so much. Hes easy enough to kill with just small arms fire. So bolter the hell out of him if you get the chance. The only scary thing about him is if your friend takes a warscythe only because of the no armor saves deal. But if you dont shoot him to death, again, power weapons.

As for the monoliths or the C'Tan, try and go for a phase out. The monolith can be a real pain in the ass, but Ive heard of others being able to just shoot them down. Its tough, but it can be done.
The C'Tan, if your lucky you can mass fire on them. But the easiest way to beat them is the Phase out. Personally I think the Phase otu rule is the best way for you to take your buddies Necrons. And when you do play, dont play scared, itll only help him beat you. Your personal morale is a big part of any match you play. Cmon man your a SM player, use an orbital bombardment on the first friggin turn and then come out swinging!

Re:Necron killing tactics

For multiple wound targets the way wbb works is that if you get some wounds that ignore saves or are double the toughness and would counter wbb are counted first before normal wounds. This means if you get 2 rends and one normal wound on a lord he can use wbb still. If they paid 15 points for Phylactery. His wbb becomes 1-3: removed, 4: 1 wound, 5:2 wounds, 6:3 wounds. Resurection Orb works on himself. So if they got the right upgrades he can be annoying to get rid of. His default weapon can also shoot as a range 12" s 5 ap 3 assault 3 weapon. Seems alright for countering SM, also gives him a little space to back off towards another unit to join. It also counts as a power weapon, though it is not as strong as the war scythe in CC; which will carve through tanks most of the time.

Necron killing tactics

Don't look at the Lord's stats and think he musn't be much of a threat. The reason people take lords is to get a resurrection orb so that their warriors will get WBB, despite whatever rending, instant death, AP1 or 2, or power weapons you kill him with. If he phalanxes up and has multiple units of warriors within range to support eachother's WBB rolls (so they'll ge to do it even if wiped out) and a Necron Lord nearby you can't just kill one squad and let it be at that.
Well one thing you can do immediately is to check out the battle reports where people have fought as, or fought against necrons. This will give you a great idea as to what units are effective and what those units are afraid of.

personally, and this is just based on my own limited experience against necrons, i'd ignore the monolith, Even with Las cannons you'd need an average 27 shots to destroy it. The best way to beat a monolith imho is to force the phase out.

Unless the unit is within 6" inches of another Warrior unit. If it is, they'll all get WBB anyway. This is why you need to make sure that if you don't isolate and entirely wipe out a Necron warrior unit, then get the offending units in a multi assault. Otherwise, you run the risk of wasting your assault, the Necrons either Monolith porting or Veil of Darknessing out of combat, and rapid firing your assault unit to death. It happens.

If you charge a unit that does not contain the Lord, (like, if he stays more than 2" away from what you charged) then you won't be directing any attacks his way anyway. Granted, that may give you the opportunity to shoot him, but this depends on what army you are and what you have left within LOS. A Tyranid army without effective anti-meq shooting with LOS just has to grit its teeth and hope for the best in that situation.

They're 18 points, btw
