Starting Ogres?

I've always wanted to start a fantasy and going through the armies I know off in my gaming group I would be playing against non of them play ogres. I like the fluff and the idea of the army, and I think it would be great fun, I have the codex ogre kingdoms but I'm wondering where to start, and more importantly what kind of armies are there? I'm wondering what would be the best choices to buy to feild a fun, but still competitive army.

Thanks in advance,
Typhon, lord of the zombie plague

Re:Starting Ogres?

When starting, an Ogre army needs two things-Bulls and a Bruiser. After you've got them, a Butcher is pretty usefull, as his magic list is insanely good if used right (even if it's a bit dangerous). Ironguts add some much needed strength to the army, and most Ogre players I know have 2 or 3 units of them at the heart of the army. Gnoblars are just funny, and if enough are thrown at the enemy eventually they'll get pulled down (But don't expect the Gnoblars to survive.) Leadbelchers give you range, and a Gorger or too is uuseful for taking out gunlines due to it's Bloodgreed rule. If anything else is needed, there's always a giant or scraplauncher! .

Have fun and remember, if the going gets toughg there are always more Gnoblars where they came from!

LLF

Tournament competative list at 2250:

*This is THE only competative list in the current metagame, MSU Ogres...

(Note I don't have my book with me ATM)
Tyrant with the tenderiser
x3 butchers, 2 dispel scrolls, 1 bang stick, sickle
x3 units 3 iron guts with musicians in each
x2 to 3 units 'naked' i.e. no upgrades, bulls with musos
x2 units 2 leadbelchers, musicians
x1 unit gnoblar trappers
x1 rhinox rider (give one the warbanner), and keep them seperate.
x1 gorger
Couple small gnoblar units (muso only upgrade) if points available.

From memory that should fill the points.

The butchers each go in a seperate iron guts unit, the tyrant in one. These are your battle line units. The 3 butchers 'buff spam' your iron guts and rhinox rider.
The bulls are as cheap as you can make them as they are your bait and flee units to set up charges for your iron guts.
The leadbelchers sit on the flanks and shoot the enemy light cav flankers. Then usethem as per the naked bull units, and quarter capturers.
1 standard in the entire army to give up.
The tyrant ALWAYs challenges or goes at multi wound enemies, he will invariably give you the max overkill bonus thanks to the tenderiser.
All the musicians are so that when you invariably flee, you get the +1 to rally.

why is that so? I thought a solid block of bulls, like max unit size, would be untouchable, I saw six just bullcharge their way through a stack of outriders, knights right through a set of archers and into the opposing players table edge. Just wanton carnage at its greatest! Why not just have a bunch of max units sitting behind gnoblars as shields and smashing everyone when the gnobs eventually break? (which they will)

You're paying for 3 Ogres that aren't getting attacks for +1 combat res and a bonus to impact.

Imagine if those 6 maybe even 9 ogres were hit by a hammer unit like Black or Chaos Knights. They're liable to break with their poor ld and let's say they were run down. You just lost a whole rank who didn't even get to fight. Ogres are so expensive losing a big unit like that would be crippling.

The rhinox rider was WD and the rules should still be somewhere on the GW site.

The problem with huge units of bulls is that
A: They suck in combat
B: They should never, ever get the bull charge off playing against a half way decent opponent (I always run up and stand just inside 6 inches if I cannot charge them)
C: With giant units (read point sinks) you end up with a massive unit that runs in circles trying to find an opponent apart from the feeder units.
The MSU army makes a wall that allows nothing to get away.
The MSU army also benefits from letting you flee with ANY unit if it will give you a flank charge with another unit.
D: Also if you don't have a rhinox rider take a unit of 4 man eaters and give them rifles, then stick the tyrant in their. That is your anvil unit (that also gives much needed shooting) and the army revoves around this unit...

That guys tourny list is horrible. I played against someone who used two butchers and a tyrant but the bulk is ManEaters (because they can all be equipped differently) and Leadblechers in units of two. a unit of iron guts and gnoblars and a hunter. Was devastating. I cant see the one posted even remotly doing well. Ill put the list up later. but it has never lost.
