However after working with PS for a while I have found it has a bad tenancy to cause a mat effect by forming rather sizable surface features(roughness) to scatter rather than reflect. This is really really bad for larger models as it means they attract and keep dust like nothing else.

Im currently experimenting with other sprays. It's definitely not an issue of shaking the can. I shook it for a good six minutes. I even timed myself. It could be that it went on too thick, but I'm not entirely convinced that's the case. You make a good point on initiating and ending the spray off of the model. The white is much worse than the black in my experience. Auto primer is horrible for miniature modeling. It expands as it dries, it takes only one small mistake to ruin the detail on a figure.

This is what I recommend for priming:

Its made for rifles and deer stands so it adhears to plastic, wood, resin, and metal like glue.

I did this whole model with just the camo paint (minus weathering):


It doesn't matter how much you get on the model (don't over do it) it will contract to a smooth finish. I had a friend tell me that he coated his tanks in GW primer and I knew what they would look like before I even looked at them. I had him recoat everything with the Krylon camo colors and it fixed most of the mess.

And, the thing is, these people who had horror stories were NOT (generally speaking) feckless idiots who didn't follow instructions. Sometimes, they did everything right and it just didn't work.

I was just lucky, I guess. I must admit, I have not tried many other products - but some of the ones I have tried give superior results. I will say; GWs stuff was always easy to use. It might not have given the best results, but it gave (to me at least) a consistent result with minimal expertise. Try testors you wont be dissapointed, I was worried the first time I used it but I trusted the pro painters who told me it wouldnt frost up.
