What's with plastic templates?!

Edit: I get the idea behind it now, thanks Dakka...I was just overreacting a bit...like a few others in this thread.

I have no idea what the deal with this is. Why would anyone make a plastic template?! GW does it and so do MANY wargames. What gives? what can you do with plastic that you can't do with cardboard (or even a ruller and a centerpoint)

I'm sorry, it's bugging me is all, my FLGS dosn't have templates in stock, so I logically thought that GW would provide their dimensions for new players...but no, they don't. I guess it's because the templates come with AoBR though. But why take the expense of making plastic ones?

Automaticly appended last post:

I guess they must want to sell more, that's why the template outlines aren't in the rulebook, nor on the website (I looked everywhere)

Oh well, not as big a deal as I was making it

Re:What's with plastic templates?!

Everything else they make is either plastic or metal. Metal is not a viable option, plastic template assembly is just three molds down from everything else they make.

The point of said uneducated remark is that since the majority of things they make are in fact plastic, why not just use plastic for their templates?

And as Dragon said, they're sturdier. So you don't have to get a new template if you spill your beer on it or a related problem wont to happen in gaming circles.

Though in 4ed IIRC they had template templates in the very back of the BGB to make your own...

Rico..

What's with plastic templates?!

I personally hate the template concept, and would rather measure.

"How many do you see?"
"2"
"Sure it's not 3?"
"Yeah, I just see 2"

If that didn't happen EVERY TIME I'd have less issue. Or maybe a small template gives +d3 hits and a big one +d6 or something. And scattering...

"No it's a little more left"
"You sure? That takes it off your 1 model and only over mine"
"Yeah, I'm sure"

The clear templates are way better than the old ones. Easier to use, harder to damage.

The tail on the cardboard flamer templates was the worse one and losing a bit off the little end makes a big difference to what the big end covers.
