Worrying about dieing and worrying about the afterlife are two different things; the physical process of dieing still is a concern for many people. Regardless of faith drowning, burning alive, and many other various ways we expire will typically cause panic. Enough Christians have said "I don't want to die (yet)" or some variation that pretending that it somehow alleviates neuroses of the issue invalid. Even atheists can claim to not worry about it becuase it is a natural process and since they aren't worried about Hell/Heaven they aren't to concerened. Hindu's have the karmic wheel. Still everyone knows it is coming and their words they say to convince others is different than the reality of they actually feel; hiding behind a mask to appear unconcerned.

Now to actually answer the question asked, because someone should.

While you have to remember that there are varying degress of concern from mild to debilitating fear, I think there are three major causes that can be singularly applied or combined.

1. Finite time and infinite goals.
2. the Unknown

This is why I personaly belive that accepting the fact that one day you won't be here is a good thing,you will perhaps relize that every day should be lived,not endured.

People have always been afraid to die. It's just because we don't know what is really after death, if anything. QFT, While I have no interest in turning this in to a "religion bashing" thread,I do belive that one of the main reasons religion seems to thrive is due to it's abilty to give people a glimmer of hope for somthing beyond mortality.

Whether you're deluded or not, self-preservation is a natural priority. What do religions and political groups do, as groups, before they do anything they claim to stand for?
They preserve themselves. They ensure their continuing existence, through themselves or fellow like-thinkers.

What do individuals do when faced with death, before they question any of their general personal values? They kick nut, scream, bite and cheat their way back into unopposed existence, at any cost. If you're deluded enough to do anything else, you're just one of those fascinating side-effects of sentience.

I believe that if I'm religious and I live a good life, and there's an afterlife waiting for me, then I'll be content, and I know I'll have contributed to the world.

If there's nothing but the void, I won't be conscious to know that I was wrong, and I'll still have had a good life.

But yes, self-preservation is an instict. I have no wish to die young. In fact, I'd like to live as long as I can. Would the process of dying fall under fear of death, or fear of pain? Don't get me wrong I'd rather not be burned alive, but how one dies seems secondary to the being dead issue.

Yea, thats what I thought.

Humans instinctively try to avoid death....I.E. at SOME level, you are "afraid" of dying. Death is something to be avoided.

If you're trying to tell me that plummeting 30 stories to your death wont so much as raise your blood pressure a single point...you're a friggin' liar.
