I very much regret it.
Then I thought Orks looked cool. I got a Trukk, (EPIC model btw) and thought I was going to collect an Ork army.
I probably am still going to collect an Ork army, but I just bought a Space Marine Battleforce.

Anyway,

Any suggestions on painting Salamander SMs for a painting noob?

Dude, look through the P&M forums. Use the search feature. There have been TONS of Salamanders pictures over the years. There have also been bunches "how to" threads about highlighting, etc.

Failing that, you can look at pictures of many other Space Marines and see where they've been highlighted.

Self-reliance is a handy skill.

Ghidorah

Of course we care! Don't worry about Ghidorah, he's harmless, despite the three heads. Your best bet to start is to get a big picture of a Salamanders Space Marine, I always get a picture of whatever I'm painting. You can get this at http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Salamanders

But I'll put this here anyways:

Just match up paints as close to the pictures as possible. I still haven't used all of the Foundation paints, but I would personally start from a Dark Angels Green Basecoat. Layer a thin coat of Snot Green onto the model. Finally, do the highlights. It's just where you hit the highest points where light would reflect. I'd mix a little Snot Green and Goblin Green and apply to the corners of the Shouldertrim, helmet, knee pads, etc. Drybrush the gun with Boltgun Metal.
Hope this is a little help!

Htm, I think you are missing a /s corpsesare fun.

SuperSN: Try for even coverage. That means a nice smooth primer layer and then thin your paints a bit. Once you have a solid basecoat, then use washes and highlights to bring out detail. I suggest priming black, basecoating in a medium green, adding a highlight of a lighter green, allow to dry, then wash with your base color (will help smooth transitions. Then wash a dark green, trying to keep it in recesses. that will give you a very solid and fairly quick figure and you can do several at one time. Practice on singles first, though, until you get the hang of it.

I have a suggestion!

http://www.thewarstore.com/product39110.html

Grab a can of that, and hit your models with it. Then, use Thraka green wash; one wash is actually usually good enough to pull off a decent-looking gradient, and it looks suitably salamander-y. From there, you can pick out details at your leisure, but by then 80% of the work is done for you.

If you want my opinion I have always believed salamanders base coated with snot green have a beautiful quality that those with orkhide shade in recesses and under the snot green fail to achieve.

Painting Salamanders

Last night, I did some experimenting with Orkhide Shade and Thraka Green to see how they looked next to my Salamander army (from the Armageddon Codex days).

Some things I learned:
You will always need two thin layers of Snot Green. This can be basecoat, Snot, Snot or Snot, wash, Snot.

Without that second layer of Snot Green, the models do not look the same. Snot over black is not even, Snot over Orkhide is too dark, and Snot washed with Thraka isn't even close to the same color.

Scorpion Green is still the perfect highlight color.

I haven't decided on what new process I will use when I revisit my Sallies (or even if I will change). I have the double whammy of wanting them to look even better than my old marines while still wanting them to match. I will say that to start off, black primer, two thinned layers of Snot Green and a nice blended highlight of scorpion green is a quick way to achieve decent looking Salamanders with the current look. Details are Burnished Gold. Chaos Black boltgun case and backpacks. Boltgun Metal vents and the rest of the boltgun. White and Golden Yellow are good colors for honor markings, paint a few guys with hammers (just paint a cross with a fat cross beam) or some flamey part (paint yellow with some stylized wavy bits at the end). Free hand a flame if you feel daring.
