Review on the GW paint brushes

I had picked up a few of these when I met a client for a commission in a GW store , He was running late so I got to talking with the manager about the new brushes . After hearing they are made in the Winsor Newton factory and heard the price being between 4.50 -8.00 for a kolinsky sable brush I gave a few a whirl . I picked up the fine detail , standard , small dry brush , and the stipple brush all for the cost of about one series 7 . I painted up one of my Iron vets featured in my guard blog , and a wraith lord and I have to say for the cost these brushes are def. worth it , I do like my series 7 better but not by much . The dry brush was great did some base work with it , the standard and fine detail held paint well and had a good flow . I havnt did much with the stipple brush but it seems like it will come in handy down the road . The handles also have a nice almost rubbery feel and offer a good comfortable grip well worth the money and cant really beat it unless you go series 7 or better .

Now if GW makes some paint shapers that would be awesome .

My GW brushes tend to shed easily, there's some good synthetic brushes I've been using lately that keep their tip shape, don't shed and cost less than GW's.

Cosmic wrote:Paint shapers, eh? I've got some brushes with a rubber tip called "Colour Shaper" that I use for applying this rubber masking stuff... What else are they used for, then?

They're used mainly for modeling. The most common shapers are made of metal, and one of the pros they have is that if the modeling putty (be it GS or another kind) dries on it you can sand it away. Of course, one of the biggest cons is that they "hurt" the surface, so to avoid that you need to apply a layer of solid vaseline and have some soft plastic on in (like a shop's bag).

With the rubber brushes (as we call them here), you get the reversed effects: you cannot let the modeling putty dry on them by accident for you'll ruin them, but you can get them wet and work directly on the putty obtaining smooth textures.

I think generally what people are trying to say Slann is ,

it may be true that the current GW brush is better than the previous junk . ( thus you feel like its a sudden god send deal )

It still doesnt mean the price vs quality is any better than the alternatives.

Review on the GW paint brushes

I know next to nothing about shopping for brushes... usually when my brushes start to become unusable I go to walmart and cruise through the craft section and pick a synthetic brush that looks like it has a good tip to replace the dead brush... I don't even know what sizes I have. Any tips on brush care? I don't really do much more than clean them out with water from the faucet, and stroke them across a paper towel before returning them to their holders.
