New to Necrons (A helping hand appreciated!)

Greetings all.

Whilst trying to decide which army to make my first, I stumbled across an amazing deal on eBay for a whole bunch of Necron figures for cheap. I quickly pounced, winning the auction... that pretty much made the choice for me, now all I need is a clue! I'm aiming to mainly play 500pt games for now, upping to 750pts in the near future.

Basicially, I was hoping some kind soul could spare a few minutes to outline what a respectable Necron force at these point-values would look like. Figures are no problem, unless of course you expect me to have three monoliths

Regards,

-Tantras
(Newly mechanised nub warlord).

First off, I don't like being the bearer of bad news but in my opinion you made a mistake. In my opinion necrons have to be played at higher points values and be played by an experiences player to do well. Also, you can't be versing a high-caliber army with a high-caliber general behind it. Even a good general could pick you apart sadly.

Now, necrons CAN do well, here are two examples: http://www.yesthetruthhurts.com/2009/08/battle-report-necrons-vs-iyanden.html and http://www.yesthetruthhurts.com/2009/08/battle-report-necrons-vs-mech-eldar.html but that is at higher points levels...

Necron Lord - 140
Resurrection Orb

Warriors - 180
10x

Warriors - 180
10x

This is the only thing you can do for the most part. Your only other options are to:

Swap the Res Orb for 3x Scarab Bases, or 1 wraith.

Give the Necron Lord different wargear up to 40 points.

I think its going to be an horrible army for you to try and use. Any decent army could wipe you out. You got no mobility and nothing with a range over 24". You also have literally no anti-armor other than lucky gauss hits. Your highest strength weapon is 5 and thats a 12" staff of light. Basically I don't think you'll have fun vs. most people :(.

This kinda reminds me of me trying to play deathwing at 500 points. It's literally impossible (lol) but even if you get an army out there it will get torn apart by most everything.

Grim tidings indeed... but I appreciate your candour! Is the army still utterly ineffectual at 750pts, too?

EDIT: I just found Legoburner's Necron Army List which would seem to indicate that there's at least a small amount of hope!

New to Necrons (A helping hand appreciated!)

Necrons tend to rely heavily on 2 things.

1: The monolith.
Pretty much unstoppable for most people, it can cause a great deal of damage and gives you a nice strong point aswell as some nice rules.
But its pertty heavy on points.

2: The C'tan.
both the deceiver and nightbringer are solid models that are hard to kill.
Both tend to destroy 99% of what they come into contact with aswell.

Both the C'tan and the monolith are heavy on points though, but are well worth them.
At around 1,000 points you may be able to do something, but 1,250+ you can start something good.

Re:New to Necrons (A helping hand appreciated!)

Well, unfortunately, Necrons are pretty boring at 500. Not bad necessarily (it really depends on the army you're against), just boring. Compulsory choices take up 460 points (Naked lord, 2x 10 warriors), giving you only 40 points left. I usually do destroyer body + warscythe on my Lord with those, or you could bring a rez orb. Personally, I feel like if all you do is give a lord a rez orb, he has no chance of being worth the 140 points he costs in a 500 point game. A destroyer lord can zip around ripping just about anything that can be fielded at 500 points apart in CC, and laughing off low strength fire with his T6. He also solves the anti-armor problem, since a warscythe rolls 2d6 for penetration.

At 750 you actually get to make choices. I've always thought 750 was an awkward points level for Necrons, since it isn't enough points to bring most Necron units in the numbers required for them to be survivable and useful. You could bring a monolith, put a gaze or phylactery on your lord, and be done with it. It depends on your gaming group though, as some people cry cheese at monoliths in low point games. Alternatively, you could bring a tomb spyder or two to babysit your warriors, and add some more warriors or scarabs.
