Sometimes it can be used to help with shading.
On dark models you can basecoat black, then use a foundation colour as a 1st colour then build from that.

However, two weeks ago, I saw that Velleho had come out with their own range of colors and inks that look surprisingly like the GW foundations and the inks have an extra color as well. And about washes: i have read alot of good stuff about the brown and black washes but not anything about the others.
