Re:Can a treeman defeat a greater demon?

I hate to be rough but I am not going to suger coat it.

Not a chance.

Greater Daemons have too many tricks, and far better stats than a treeman. If you are fighting Daemons, dont even bother with one honestly, since 50% of all daemon attacks are flaming, and that is a bad time for any treeman.

Use speed and lots of bowfire....even a Greater Daemon will die to 40-50 bow shots. maybe even less since wood elves shoot very well. The only Greater Daemon that most likely wont die to it is the Bloodthirster, since he has an armor save (most of the time) plus ward....and will be down your throat in one or two turns at the least.

Dryads are good, but lose their ward save. glade guard, scouts, riders are the best way to go imo...wardancer to hit flanks and spell singers to help block magic.

HiveFleet wrote:
Not a chance.

Yeah, that's pretty much the conclusion I arrived at as well. Woodies don't stand a chance at all IMO. The only strategy I was thinking is to use treesinging and try to avoid a greater demon. Good thing there are scenarios instead of just pitched battles.

Re:Can a treeman defeat a greater demon?

Well, I wouldnt say woodies are 'completely' boned, but it will be very difficult for you if you are limited to just a forest spirit army. unfortunately, the ARD BOYZ from fantasy mission designers mustve had a mental prolapse, since the mission are effectively a pitched battle with a "whoooo kill the standard, or kill the boss" bonus points....if you table your oppenent, he is still dead...it is standard VP's, with BP for the extra conditions.

If I was running your army. I would make sure I have A) Drycha, B) Treeman Ancient, and finally C) as many spell singers as you can. Mix in Wild riders if you have them, as they are forest spirits, since they can flee and bait. (I believe they are not ITP...but I could be wrong there.) If not, take as many dryad units and treekin units, and have them use the tree surfing/ambush rules...take down the core units and flamers asap. The Greater Daemons, depending on what you face (more than likely it will be Keeper/Bloodthirster) are going to be tough to deal with. A treeman supported by treekin, or another treeman "might" live...but honestly, with a 20" move...it will be hard to dodge them.

Best of Luck!

Can a treeman defeat a greater demon?

Well I have a lot of woodies to choose from, but in an all-comer list I was thinking the forest spirit list could be effective, and fun to play (that sentiment should eliminate me from a ‘Ardboyz tournament anyway). Drycha is a must, so she is the general. I think her ability to bring in units in a wood could be vital in overcoming an opponent’s battle line or deployment.

I thought about the treeman ancient but I opted for a lvl four spellweaver (on a unicorn), with 2 lvl one branchwraiths and another lvl two spell singer. That, hopefully, should give me adequate spell defense. I am still up in the air though about what lore the spellweaver should take. Lore of Life is always good, as is Beasts. The Lore of Athel Loren is fine, but I will have three other casters who can access it.

Then the rest of the army is dryads, treekin, and wild riders, who are itp.

Re:Can a treeman defeat a greater demon?

Ah i see. Well, forget the bait and switch trick I was alluding to with the riders, use them as flankers.

For magic, Dont bother with Life, it is completely useless against Daemons. Personally, I would go for Athel Loren, but beats has a couple of useful spells too. They are very similar lores.

I think that terrain will make or break your games here....if there are woods, you have got a decent change of taking him out, or at least fighting to a draw or minor win...I find, with a more difficult army, if you just play to have fun, and take everything in your stride, regardless of the venue, you will actually do alot better than you expect, and hey, maybe have fun doing it!

Can a treeman defeat a greater demon?

Its going to be a very rough match up for you as everyone pointed out. The only point I can really add is if you get first time, poor fire into all those T3 core demons and kill them. Kill the units to a man to get the VP, once the horrors drop below 6, ignore them because they cannot cast.

Your basically playing the "please don't make your ward saves" first anything in core. Flesh hounds will prove problematic because the t4, 2 wounds takes a lot. I don't think its a horrible match up, but at the Ard boys level, I don't think your best magic list competes with the average demon list, when you factor in all their Magic resistence.

Focus on strengths: mobility, lots of bows, long range fire fight. Maybe even sacrifice a unit of drycha + dryad's to march block their entire army.

Re:Can a treeman defeat a greater demon?

Ironically, I would be the complete opposite of that army. I would MAYBE have one or two units of dryad, period. The woodelf list lends itself to mobile shooting and points denial rather than stand up and fight...plus, the foest spirits suffer under 6th ed rules for Daemons, whereas Daemonic armies were buffed tremendously and had all the crappy rules (such as their saves being removed by magic) taken away.

I believe I posted an army in the army list forum...i am by no means a wood elf expert, but I thought that the army would be fairly nasty.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/257264.page

Can a treeman defeat a greater demon?

I think a character with annoyance of netlings, armor of the fey (4+ wardsave against magical attacks), amber pendant (enemy models in base contact always strike last) and a great weapon will hold up a greater demon fairly well...

Then have them in a unit of eternal guard for tons of static res and the -1 ld item and you have a unit the gd will have to avoid all game or pretty much get an easy -7 combat res and -1 ld from the wraithstone.

I think that is the best way to deal with demons is to minimize their killing power in close combat, force them to take instability tests at major negative combat res and kill them through that way.
