Starting a Vampire army, need advice!!!

I'm starting a Vampire army, i like the look and feel of this army, its refreshing after playing Brits for so long. Just wondering on how this army actually plays well and well... how to play it. Much advise is needed. Also i was told i should buy 100+ zombies is this true? What else should i buy (i'm talking 2500 level here), are blood knights worth the 55 pt cost or should i just stick to black knights? Should i bring corpse karts? or are those a pass? Should i take necromancers or just stay with vampire casters?

At the local club i play at there are 2 Daemon players 2 Dark Elf players, 2 Mortal players and Ogre player, an everything player (this guy has every army and its a surprise what he brings) and myself.

Hmmm....

So, Vampire Counts are an army that wins through long combats and lots of magic.

Yes, buy lots of zombies. Although you should not put them in your list. Vampire Count magic allows you to create entirely new units out of nowhere.

Blood Knights are worth it.

The Battalion is a good start.

Good!

Re:Starting a Vampire army, need advice!!!

Blood knights are indeed worth it if you use them well. Keep in mind their frenzy could have them chasing birds all game, and they need protection. I personally like the black knights (with regen banner BSB) with the vampire hanging back using the item that lets them us his WS. There are some nasty combos with either unit, just do some research and I am sure you will find one that you like.

If you go all out with the magic, yes it is possible to create that many zombies, esp if your opponent doesn't have much DD. Remember though, that created zombie are pretty awful, and each created unit gives up addition VP if destroyed. They have their place, and can be powerful (Fear factor + the keep coming back) against low leadership and low combat power armies. They struggle against anything with high volume attacks or high volume shooting.

I don't have enough experience with corpse carts to be able to comment too much on them. Every time my opponents take them, they don't seem to do all that much. They could be decent, but they might be hard to use properly.

I would only use necromancers if you start to run out of points, and only to hold certain items. Vampires are much better, but the expense sometimes catches up. If you have an open character slot, and not enough points for what you want in a vamp, a necro with a nifty item can fit in.

I personally recommend some fast units to protect your flanks and harass enemy mobile or ranged units. Since VC live and die by static resolution, any unit that can negate or lessen the bonus your units get is a big threat. Locking down flankers and ranged units is very important. (created zombies also work, but are more limited on what they can do.)

Starting a Vampire army, need advice!!!

I'm not a zombie fan. I'd rather take a raising power (summon ghouls or lord of the dead) and raise lots of troops that are actually halfway decent. Zombies do have their place and I do end up using them from time to time but they usually end up being free victory points for my opponent. I'd stock up on extra skeletons (hw and shield) and/or ghouls. The general consensus is that ghouls are better but skeletons have their advantages, too. Just get what you like and stick with one or the other.

Blood knights are pretty good but a good opponent will have no problem exploiting their weaknesses. They're extremely vulnerable to shooting and leading them around is really easy. Every other rare choice is better in most situations. I prefer black knights over blood knights because they're a lot cheaper, they ignore terrain and they aren't frenzied.

I always bring a corpse cart. I'll start bringing two once I get a second one built. 100 points is very cheap for what you get. I consider it a staple unit.

Necromancers are a great way to conserve points. They're half the cost of a vampire and you're guaranteed to get Vanhel's. That's arguably your most powerful spell so that's very important. Put him on a corpse cart and you can hide the corpse cart in a unit. At first glance necros seem pretty worthless but after running one regularly I find myself taking one in every game now.

Starting a Vampire army, need advice!!!

A necro is only 55 points, which is a steal to get another channel and start with Van Hels. I'm always going to take a pair of them.
Yeah, the vampire is better, but he also tends to land at 3 times the cost.
If you want to make enemies, everyone seems to be talking about the huge block of wights with great weapons, crown of WS7, and the lore of light.
Personally, I dislike death stars, and VC can compete just fine without them.
The area effect ASF is really nice; mostly to deny your opponents re-rolls when they have ASF.

With VC, keep 4 things in mind.
1) Your General MUST survive.
2) You'll want enough standards to not lose a break point mission. (all ghouls = no standards)
3) It's good to have a block of 20 core for Watchtower missions.
4) The strength of the army is in replacing lost troops; so an edge in the magic phase (like +2 power dice) is a good idea.

As to a previous comment on fell bats, they are now warbeasts (no longer infantry) so I'm pretty sure you only raise 1 wound per casting, not D6 like you would have in 7th edition.
On Zombies, a summoned unit zombies worth only 50 points is a nice way to distract an enemy death star.

-Matt

I can't agree with the blood knights. Their point cost is beyond extravagant.

Cerebrium wrote:
Would constant zombie and skeleton spam work? Zombies have terrible damage output, will pretty much always strike last and have terrible survivability. Skeletons are decent enough but let's face it for 8 points a model you should be getting more. Having said that, summoning a disgusting amount of zombies after the game has started is very possible (though you'll need a lot of models) and skeletons are excellent blank templates for support you can give them.

Think of Skeletons as a rice cracker, nothing special on their own but with the right toppings you're in business.
