DakkaDakka Teatime

Time for another food thread I feel, as they are pretty much guaranteed not to cause argument, flaming etc. Sadly still not immune to Trolling, but hey ho.

So, it's 5:30, and you're heading round your Mum's for some much needed, and hopefully well deserved Birthday Din Dins. Rather than wasting money on some poncey restaurant with a snooty waiter, your treat is a home cooked meal from your Mumsie.

What's on the menu then?

For me?

Starter would be that tasty Salad she showed me how to make. Can't remember the name of it, but it has diced Cucumber, Tomato and Red Onion, a Red Wine Vinegar and Olive Oil dressing, with Capirs and Croutons for taste. Absolutely delicious! Light as well!

Main course? Pan Fried Lemon Chicken with Garlic. Every bit as good as it sounds. Crispy skin on the Chicken, with a Lemon and Garlic sauce. Starts off being cooked in a pan to brown the Chicken, then bunged in the oven until the Garlic has caramelised. So damned tasty!

Pudding (or Dessert if you're being poncey)... Triple Chocolate Trifle. Made with Creme Fraiche, Choclate Muffins, Morello Cherries, Chocolate Chips, and Kirsch. So good, I want some right bleeding now. Must bug her to get the recipe like!

Your turn to tempt tastebuds the world over... Rules are simple. It must be home cooked, and it must be something your Mum can cook (or could cook for those unfortunate enough to have lost their Mums).

My mom isn't a bad cook, but I never discovered this thing called "flavor" until I started cooking for myself :p In terms of free meal my mom is cooking (or rather preparing, and my step-dad grilling), probably:

Appetizer - Jalapenos sliced in half, filled with cream cheese and topped with yellow cheese. Grilled til crispy on the outside and a little soft on the inside. I could die every time.

Main course - Pork chops prepared for a long time the oven, slathered in brown gravy (and preferably grilled onion, though my mom would probably be opposed) with home-mashed potatoes with extra butter and heavy seasonings (like a beef rub) added.

Dessert - Chocolate pudding crepes with whipped creme.

I know now what I want her to make for my birthday.

Mammy Da Boss is best at Irish stew actually, and it's one of my favourites. Though she does a good line in steak and kidney pies too.
So I guess it'd have to be (and this will probably be the most stereotypically Irish post on dakkadakka, forgive me):
Starter:
Potato cakes with some onions in.

Main Course:
Irish stew, maybe with dumplings. If not, mash.

Dessert:
Not common in my house, but apple tart is good. Or apple crumble and custard.

And a pint of guinness to go with it. A different stout would be better, but let's be realistic, it's me mam, I'm lucky if she doesn't buy in budweiser by mistake .
