Partially inspired by this article, who then Dakka is your Holmes ?

For me, partially I'm sure due to childhood viewing, Jeremy Brett IS the great detective. I have a fondness for some of the Rathbone versions....I used to watch them and Charlie Chan both on BBC 2 many many years ago.

Kind of cautious about the new Guy Ritchie version, the buzz about it is good and Downey Junior is a solid choice..but...hmm... something doesn't seem right.

Jeremy Brett, no discussion. It helps that the programs were incredibly faithful to the books, but he completey nailed Holmes's mannerisms as well

The Guy Ritchie version will just be another comic book style action adventure. I'm not expecting it to be even close to the novels, but that doesn't mean it won't be fun. Don't get me started on Jude Law as Watson though...

He actually made a top hat look like something a gentleman would chhose to wear as well... and not many men can do that.

I think the ovreall production values of the shows he did helped a lot too, but he just nailed the "quirky genius" aspect of HOlmes' personality completely for me. Whenever I read any Holmes book now, he is who I imagine.

Totally spaced the actor's name, but "his" Watson was good as well, an actual competent sidekick rather than a buffoon to enable Holmes to explain things to the audience via.

Oh no. Cohen and Ferrell are abominations, not in the least bit funny. Borat was the only real 'humour' from either of them, and that was almost entirely situational and based on the victim not the artists 'talent'.

The Downey portrayal I will also pass on. Not because of Downey as it is likely going to be mostly an action film.
It is kind of like this new Disney version of a Christmas Carol, from the clips (like Holmes) looks to be yet another no-holds-barred, adrenaline-fueled thrill ride.

But yeah, Jeremy Brett all the way.

Exactly!

Also, I believe that accent is exclusive to the town of Crapps Heath. It is actually in the U.S. and actors that think they can do an English accent come from there.

It looks like an action movie. The original stories were not actionless but this looks like True Lies or something.

I like Jeremy Brett too. They often repeat his episodes on one of the Freeview channels.
