rules for custom modeling

I have a few questions about some models i custom built...

1st - I made a Vulkan HeStan model out of a chapter master model which looks pretty nice, but i mounted him on a 40mm base is that legal or does he have to be on a standard base??

2ed - I built an Attack quad out of a few extra bikes i have but since it ended up being much bigger than the previous bikes i mounted them on 2 large size square bases glued together... they will fit on the standard attack bike base but they look funny on them.

Ill post some pics if that would help

EDIT:spelling

Basing is a both straight forward and irritating at the same time. In the 40kRB, it says that you should mount models on the bases that models of their size are mounted on, but if you choose to do otherwise, let your opponent know and if they do not approve then don't use it. Or something along those lines. My take, basically screw you if you dont the base my model is mounted on, its a reasonable base for the model and its not going to have a benchmark of a difference on the game.

So, what Im saying is, base it how you want, as long as its reasonable. I'll probably have a problem with a unit of grots mounted on 60mm bases, but if your chaplain is mounted on a 40mm base, thats cool. Make sense?

Please say yes id like to make ti to 50+ attacks with a model some day.

Honestly for me it depends on what the model is. If for example your tooled up space marine commander whos a cc monnster has a bigger base. He can get even more stuff into cc with him. Also it can matter for leader ship tests and what not. A bigger base means a bigger range for imperial gaurd orders. A unit that would not have being in range previously could now be in range due to the bigger base. Pedro got alot better with a bigger base as well. Increased synapses range to come to think of it to. AS I said above. it does depend on what the model can achieve with a bigger base. even a third of an inch can mean the difference to a win or a loss.

About the only thing id see where you would have a problem with it would be at a tourney. I know that if I come across some one using pedro on a bigger base hes going to have to pull out one on a smaller one or snap him off and glue him onto the right sized base. Expect other tourney players to expect you to do the same for certain models.

Its when you take terminators on 25mm bases and things of that nature. Thats getting a bit cheaty. But making say, a regular rhino larger or something, go ahead, its bigger, therefore easier to hit, therefore harder to hide behind terrain, therefore more minis in base to base contact, yadda yadda yadda you get the point

You spelled "custom" wrong, twice....

But anyway, I don't want to be a dick without giving you some information:

It really doesn't matter as long as the other player doesn't mind and as long as it's reasonable.

So i think i may have solved my problem ... for hestan im going to mount him on a 25mm base that is also mounted to a 40mm base giving him a commanding view of of the field ...

and from what i can tell attack bikes dont need to be on a base at all...ive seen many people running them without... so putting them on a larger base shouldnt matter

You spelled "custom" wrong, twice....

i know ... just keeping everyone on thier toes ... or i type toooo fast whatever

rules for custom modeling

As a general rule, I would say if you can't take advantage of a bigger base, like stated by the others, it just working against you and nobody would mind.

As a rule as written, you have to base your model on the base provided.

In your specific case, I would say that you're bike base are barely than the bike, so in either case it's OK. For Vulkan, I don't think it would matter in most game against most people (don't think he can gains a real advantage for his base), but in official tournament, I believe it wouldn't be accepted.
